3.0 out of 5 stars Well...
The pictures are nice. But otherwise this is just your average guidebook to horses. The information is easy to understand and some of it, like the heights of horses, is represented visually. But if you are looking to know a little bit about a lot of breeds, this would be a good book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Breed Identification and History, December 26, 2000

I am so glad that I purchased this book. I needed a reference guide to help me identify different breeds of horses and ponies for the Photo Model Horse Shows that I have been participating in. Since I will eventually judge a show, I needed to be prepared to classify horse breeds from the photograph entries that will be sent to me. It is easy to read, the photographs are lovely, and there were only a few breeds not listed. Good job!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful, February 20, 2000

I have been riding for ten years and still look back on this book to brush up on my horsemanship! I would recommend it to anyone who is beginning riding or is just getting a horse to have at home. The only thing missing from this book is riding information. It covers many breeds and why they are signifigant, and beginners horsemanship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for BASIC information on breeds, July 9, 2011
By

I have a several-years-old copy of the Eyewtiness Handbooks version of this, which, as far as I can tell, is identical besides a slightly different cover. I love it. The pictures are great and it gives useful information on the breeds and the history of horses in general, but if you're looking for extremely detailed information on particular horse breeds, this isn't for you. I use it for a random book to read when I'm bored and as reference pictures for drawings. (I'm currently working on a "project" where I'm planning on drawing ever horse from the book) It would be a great gift for a horse-loving preteen or teenager, but somebody under the age of 10 probably would lose interest quickly because of the wordiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars lots of information, April 5, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was excellent for my 8yr. old. It contains lots of information on horses without being too overwhelming. The color photos and scale depictions of size really captured her interest. I would definitely recommend this book for kids who are not actively involved in equestrian activities but want to learn more about different breeds of horses. The one draw-back I found was that my daughter collects figurines of different breeds, and some we just could not find in the book.

This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn about horses! It had tons of different breeds, and I have read this TONS of times, and I enjoy it more each time! And, if you don't like to read, it's just as fun to just look at the pictures!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great horse indentification book., August 1, 1998

This review is from: DK Handbooks: Horses (Paperback)
This book is great for identifying breeds and has almost all of the breeds (although I can name a few more, like the Mangalarga)and GREAT pictures. It also has information on the horse basic although I've seen better saddles than those in the photos. I really reccomend this book for anyone into horses.
