Grade 4-8?Ponies and horses frolic across double-page spreads in this oversized volume. Numerous full-color paintings, photos, and reproductions accompany the text as it describes the animals' traits, care, breeds, and history, and preparation for riding. The instructional tone is informal, although sometimes a bit wordy. Jargon reflects the book's British origin and the focus is on flat saddle riding. This highly browsable title resembles Juliet Clutton-Brock's Horse (Knopf, 1992), but it includes a foldout that shows a group of pristine horses, riders, and groomers demonstrating horse care in an immaculate barn.?Charlene Strickland, formerly at Albuquerque Public Library, NM

Gr. 3^-8. A wide variety of illustrations combined with brief sections of text in a mix of styles and sizes of typeface give readers a broad sampling of information on horses and horsemanship. Labeled drawings document sections on horse anatomy, diet, care, and grooming as well as tack. Other features include a world map noting horse origins and migration patterns; charts of breeds, types, and sizes of horses, accompanied by comparative color illustrations; and photographs and reproductions of works of art and historical documents illustrating the horse's place in mythology, warfare, transportation, and farm work. An overview of pleasure and competitive riding includes tips on evaluating riding schools and stables. Although the wide scope precludes treating any aspect of the topic in depth, the handsome format and numerous illustrations will spur interest and give horse lovers much to pore over.
