Book Description

Four young teens and a ten year old are given permission to camp out on their outback Queensland property with their horses. They were hoping to have a few nights of fun tracking down the mysterious Min Min lights that had haunted the area for centuries but when three escaped prisoners stumble on their camp, the teens have to think hard and fast to outsmart the men or risk being kidnapped or killed. The excitement grows as the Outback Riders work desperately to escape from the clutches of the men who lived by violence, climaxing in a scene that will take your breath away and keep you reading page after page, unable to put the story down.

Following on the success of the first book in The Outback Riders series, "Horses Of The Sun", this book develops the characters further and you see the romance that starts to grow between Amy and Brandon which will last all their lives. "Horses Of The Light" takes you on an outback adventure with young people who dream of achieving so much, but who have to overcome many difficulties before their dreams come true.

Written for the 8 - 15 age group, but enjoyed by adults who appreciate an exciting and intriguing story about life in outback Australia.

Approximately 70,000 words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great yarn July 30, 2012

I actually enjoyed this instalment in the "Outback Rider" series even more than the first. A deeper and lovely sense of place comes from "Horses of the Light". The laid back and close knit characters, along with the horses, make this another great Aussie story for kids (and adults!) everywhere.

I always enjoy a well written "horse" story; I never outgrow horse/animal stories. I enjoyed the story line and the Australian theme.

Although not a young adult, I thought this was a charming story with developed characters. And it revolves around horses, so that is a plus for me. Read more

More About the Author

Leanne Owens is an Australian writer who is also an English teacher with a Masters in Education. She has written for horse magazines for over thirty years and has also worked on a horse based tv series. Her school years were spent in Victoria and then she made her home in Queensland, first in the far outback where she met her husband and helped run his 36,000 acre sheep and cattle property, and then in the beautiful Lockyer Valley region where they raised their three children. Leanne is a well known and respected identity in the Australian horse world, having won over 30 national titles with her horses, including the famous Quarter Horse stallions Days Of Gold and Nights Of Gold (you can google them!) and also being responsible for running, on a volunteer basis, some of the premier horse shows in the country.

Leanne says she has procrastinated for over 35 years about completing all the novels in her head and it was the realisation that when she dies, the people and animals in her novels will die, too, unless she gets them into print where they can continue to live without her. It was her love of these fictional characters that finally forced her to give them the chance they deserve: to live on forever, for as long as words can live, they will give life to them (with apologies to Shakespeare).

Starting with things she knows best, children, horses and the outback, Leanne's series Outback Riders kicks off with the first book, Horses Of The Sun.
