This is a remarkable first work by author Heather Simonsen. As a central Texas native, I think she really captures the beauty and grace of the Texas hillcountry setting. The book also gives many wonderful insights into Mormon religion and culture as seen from an outsider's perspective -- the first major work of fiction to do so since John Fitzgerald's "Great Brain" series (although this book is definitely geared to an adult audience).
It was a book I couldn't put down, even though her mouth-watering descriptions of succulent Tex-Mex cooking led to frequent hunger pangs. Nothing a quick fix of chips and queso couldn't cure!
