Disciple - "Horseshoes & Handgrenades" Album Interview

Disciple, O God Save Us All

Too many bands fall prey to the age-old conundrum where, if they sound great live, their albums fall short—and if they can craft a great studio recording, they lack the goods to pull it off live. That's what makes the new Disciple release, O God Save Us All, such an achievement: It's a tight, terrific collection of hard-hitting rock songs with a ... Read more in Amazon's Disciple Store

I love Disciple, but have always bemoaned the fact that they never have a 'complete' release. It seems that every release has 2 or 3 GREAT songs and then the rest range from average to pretty good. As compared with earlier releases, By God and Back Again, recent Disciple CDs have had too many 'syrupy' choruses for my taste.

As always, Disciple pulls no punches lyrically and spiritually and that is a huge reason they have such staying power with me despite my feelings that none of their CDs is truly complete or an all-time great. For sure, Disciple has all-time great songs (By God, Back Again, Rise Up, Game On, Regime Change, Scars Remain, Southern Hospitality, 321) - just not all-time great albums.

H&H is a marked improvement over Southern Hospitality, which I rarely listen to any longer. H&H is stylistically closest to Scars Remain. To provide context to my review, By God is my all-time fave song and CD by Disciple (with Back Again being close seconds - both in song and album).

Dear X is the most radio friendly song and is really quite good - you'll find yourself singing along with the chorus - even though I agree with Clifton Gardner's review that it's a little disconcerting to hear a Disciple CD start with strings. Regardless, this song is catchy and will help Disciple reach out to even more and newer fans.

My faves are Watch it Burn, Dear X, Battle Lines, and Remedy (in that order). The hard-core riffage and vocals on Watch it Burn and Battle Lines is reminiscant of older Project 86. Remedy is an nice power ballad, but definitely made for radio. St. Augustine and Shot Heard 'Round the World also have their moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disciple Is Back September 14, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Now don't get me wrong, I thought Disciple's last cd "Southern Hospitality" was a good cd in its own right. But it just didn't have that signature Disciple hard biting edge that their previous releases had. "Horseshoes & Handgrenades" brings back some of that sound and style that I think most fans will be pleased with. Though, maybe not quite as heavy as "Scars Remain," it still has plenty of raw power to make most happy that Disciple is back at it again. There are tracks that hold up right next to some of Disciple's heaviest songs (Watch It Burn, The Ballad of St. Agustine, Shot Heard 'Round The World, Battle Lines)and then there are those that are mellower and will probably get a lot of radio time (Dear X, Invisible, Collision, Remedy.) Overall it is a fairly well balanced album. I would definitely recommend this CD to fans of Disciple.

3.0 out of 5 stars Feel good music June 18, 2011
By Me
Format:Audio CD
Well, Ive been listening to disciple pretty much since the beginning. One thing that I loved about listening to them was that every songs was like a full throttle praise and worship giving all praise and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ!! That continued for 4 albums and then all of a sudden there was just no mention of His name. Unless you read inside the cover. Now it seems all the songs are about making someone feel better. While thats all good and well, I think Ill just stick to the older albums like By God, This might sting a little and Back Again. Buy this album and the few before it to support the ministry, other that that, meh...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great album September 18, 2010
By NCGuy
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I love a lot of Christian rock bands. Seen several in concert. Some talk about their Faith at their shows, some leave it to their music. But these guys just ooze Faith, Hope, Love, there is no denying it. Saw them in NC last night, the new songs are incredible Live, especially St. Augustine and Battle Lines. And watching them witness to the youth while the equipment was being packed was just great.

Do yourself a favor and get this album, or listen to all their album clips and pick and choose what you like. All of their albums are full of great songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars best album yet September 28, 2010
By grinder
Format:MP3 Music
I was very surprised when i got this album. I was blown away. This is a great album. I dont understand these other people putting this album down. it starts off with ""Dear X", which is a softer song but great lyrics. chorus is very catchy. You will catch yourself singing this song through the day. Then you get hit hard with the hard hitting "watch it burn". "The ballad of st augustine" and "Shot heard around the world" are the best hard rocking songs up here. i love the new double bass drums on this album. i think it brings something new and exciting to Disciple."Eternity" and "worth the pain" are just beautiful songs. Great job Disciple! This is a great rock album period! BUY THIS ALBUM!

5.0 out of 5 stars Back Again September 15, 2010
By Sherman
Format:Audio CD
This album follows in the tracks of Scars Remain as a great work. Southern Hospitality was good but not as good as This one and the previous one. The band breaks out in to different musical influences than seen in their past recordings. This may be due to the introduction of some younger member sin the band. Whatever the cause this wil be one of my all time favorite albums.

There are many great songs on this album; great style and some variation between the songs - not all songs sounded the same. Great lyrics to accompany the great music.
