You can not remove this lock by turning it, it will spin and spin around, foiling any attempt to steal your water. We get this question all the time, "can't you just turn it and take it off?". The answer is no, you can not get to the water without undoing the padlock. It will be completely clear when you receive it, we promise.
The thread is 3/4" Garden Hose thread, this thread is the North American standard. If you take a tape measure to your faucet, it will appear to be about 1 inch, but is still called 3/4" Garden Hose Thread.
The Hose Bibb Lockout (Water Faucet Lock) is a hose bibb locking system comprised of two parts, a threaded section with a rotating flange, and a smooth cover with a slot for the flange. The rotating flange has a hole to accept the lock. To lock a hose, screw the threaded section onto the hose bibb (faucet), place the cover over top with the flange on the threaded section protruding through the slot of the smooth section, and place your lock through the hole. The lock now prevents removal of the smooth section. At this point, when the smooth section is rotated, it only turns the rotating flange of the threaded section; consequently, the threaded section cannot be removed without removing the lock.
It is designed for padlocks with shackle diameter of 9/32" or 1/4".

I am the president of a local history society, and I was determined to stop people from stealing water from the outside faucets of our museum house. Every penney counts with our tight budget. I was leery of these faucet locks when I first saw them. Then I put them on, and now I am very impressed. There is no way to cheat these lockouts, and we are no longer providing water for theives. The drips were stopped! The theives are history! As advertised, these are quick, easy and effective to use. Very highly recommended.

In theory, this hose bibb lockout is perfect - the design is really neat and I am sure that in most cases it works a treat. Down here in Texas (out Katy, TX way) perhaps we have different hose bibbs as this just doesn't fit on ours. In the image shown with the product, the faucet has no additional pieces on it, and the lock mechanism fits perfectly. For ours, we have a section that is wider than the threading on the bibb, just above it (ie coming from the horizontal piece of tapeware down towards the bib thread. This means that the outer (silver) component can't get far enough over the inner component, o the tongue doesn't stick out far enough for the lock to pass through. Our bad luck i guess. other than this issue, it's a great product, turned up reasonably quickly and is ok value for money.
