Editorial Reviews

The Berlin-based Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa conceives of music as 'a calligraphy of space and time' and regards the flute as the instrument that can most deeply realise his musical ideas, the performer' breath embodying the living power of sound en

Toshio Hosokawa is the heir to Toru Takemitsu in being both inspired by his native Japanese culture and active in the Western avant-garde; Hosokawa studied in Germany. To my ears, he fits squarely within the Central European modernist tradition with his atonal language and instrumental techniques, while his "Japanese-ness" usually manifests only as invariably slow tempos and contemplativeness. Indeed, for decades Hosokawa was recorded on labels like Wergo and Collegno that celebrated the German avant-garde. But because Hosokawa continually points to his Japanese background, he has become a hot composer these days, a touch of the exotic, and now he appears on labels like ECM and Naxos.

This Naxos disc, one of several Hosokawa releases from the label, focuses on flute music as performed by Kolbeinn Bjarnason. He is joined by other Icelandic musicians, namely the Caput Ensemble and conductor Snorri Sigfus. The liner notes were written by Hosokawa especially for this recording.

In "Sen I" for solo flute (1984-86), Hosokawa points to Japanese calligraphy as an inspiration. Like brush strokes, each of the flautist's gestures are quickly thrown out onto a background of silence. The influence of the shakuhachi (the Japanese traditional flute) and its playing style is evident from the very first bars -- Bjarnarson had studied shakuhachi himself. But what is also evident here is some emulation of the mid-century avant-garde in Europe, for extended techniques are used willy-nilly and the performer sometimes speaks through the instrument. Interesting, but perhaps juvenalia.

That earliest work with its harsh, stabbing gestures is not particularly representative of mature Hosokawa.
