5.0 out of 5 stars THE Textbook for Hospitalists
This is a great overview of the vast subject that is inpatient internal medicine. The young specialty of hospitalist is one that has needed its own dedicated text for some time. This second edition is definately it. While there is still some slight fine tuning to be done, Dr. Wachter continues to do great work for us as the Father of the Hospitalist Revolution that is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not What I was Looking For
I needed a more concise reference on specific critical care issues. This book surprised me by being hard-cover and very large. It is more like a Harrison's or Conn's Therapeutics, with a slant toward hospital care, written at about medical school or intern level. It contains whole chapters on Bayesian theory and utility analysis. I didn't want to have to sift through...

This is a great overview of the vast subject that is inpatient internal medicine. The young specialty of hospitalist is one that has needed its own dedicated text for some time. This second edition is definately it. While there is still some slight fine tuning to be done, Dr. Wachter continues to do great work for us as the Father of the Hospitalist Revolution that is occuring.
It goes without saying that Hospital Medicine is essential to the library of every Hospitalist, but should also be required reading by all Internists, FPs, and IM residents. This book brings together the various aspects of inpatient medcine from nutrition to the business of medicine to procedures and perioperative care. There are also very nice sections on critical care and cardiovascular disease as well as the vital role of consultation. My highest reccomendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book, May 23, 2001

Reader (Omaha, NE USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hospital Medicine (Hardcover)
An excellent reference for the physician who cares for hospitalized patients. Just enough detail to care for patients of every severity and type of illness, yet not so much that you are bogged down in unimportant trivia and esoteric controversies. The book is up to date, and the authors obviously know their stuff. Things like indications for ICU admission and indications for discharge make this book invaluable for physicians who care for hospitalized patients. Now if only someone will write a similar one for pediatrics....

5.0 out of 5 stars Hospital Medicine a big thumbs up, February 6, 2009
I bought this book for my son who was just starting his career as an
hospitalist. He has told me almost every day since receiving the book that it is the best book he has. He reads in it practically every day. It is his belief that it should be required text for residents who are studying to be hospitalists.

I didn't want to have to sift through the general medicine background and bread and butter conditions, to get to the diagnosis and management. Maybe it would be more useful in CDROM searchable format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Laid out and fun to read, September 13, 2009

A very enjoyable book from the point of view of a hospitalist. I like the way the author's mix EBM with their approach to each topic. I think their approachs are measured and clear and improve my personal algorithms. Easy to read after work, neither too thick nor too dull.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay. Decided to keep it despite the $100+ price, November 15, 2011
I understand it isn't meant to be a critical care textbook but it doesn't offer a great deal. I'd happily pay $60 for it again but I don't think it is worth the price. If another edition comes out, I'm hopping on it, though. Hey, there's always a returns policy.
