Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The fourth book in the Dragon DelaSangre series finds relations between Peter DelaSangre and his wife, Chloe, strained after he was forced to couple with Lorrel, a seadragon (see The Seadragon's Daughter, 2004). Peter is trying to mend fences with Chloe, but their already tense relationship is strained further when daughter Lizzie is almost abducted. Peter's business interests are at risk as well when a Dutch company, Oudere Raad, begins competing with Peter's company for property in Miami. Peter is disturbed to learn that behind the competitor are European dragons, 12 of whom have been dispatched to menace him. He soon discovers why--his brother-in-law, Derek, has taken as bride a European dragon intended for another. When Chloe is kidnapped, Peter must join forces with Derek to defeat the vengeful warriors. Troop continues taking risks with his imaginative series and surprising readers with unexpected and inspired twists. A worthy entry, opening up many possibilities for future story lines, in one of the best fantasy series around. Kristine Huntley

5.0 out of 5 stars exciting urban fantasy, January 3, 2006
This review is from: A Host of Dragons (Dragon de la Sangre) (Paperback)
Even though he has been home two years, Chloe remains angry and unforgiving towards her spouse, Peter DelaSangre for leaving their home Caya DelaSangre and got caught up in the lure of the seadragon (see THE SEADRAGON'S DAUGHTER). When Chloe asks for a family outing, the first in months, Peter readily agrees though he hates having to be amidst the mob of people. They, accompanied by their son Henri and daughter Lizzie, go to Miami for a day on the peninsular. At the dock they notice a man staring at them and then he almost kidnaps Lizzie

After retuning to their island home, twelve strangers arrive. Peter assumes he and his kin are threatened from the Oudere Raad Corporation who wants to destroy him and his family. They scour his ancestral archives and soon abduct Lizzie. Peter knows he must confront these foreigners, but in his natural essence, as a dragon who plans to dine on a dozen humans.

The fourth DelaSangre entry is an exciting urban fantasy in which Peter has to battle with an enemy that has invaded his island, assaulted his heritage, and ultimately kidnapped his daughter as these Europeans plan to destroy him. As a were-dragon, Peter's morality is different than that of humans and he sees things differently. Interestingly the four DelaSangres seem like a regular family on an outing together until the incursion occurs. Peter loves his family while Chloe reciprocates but is jealous when he goes off with other females. A HOST OF DRAGONS is a fine entry in a series starring a hero with a different ethics system.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best One Yet, October 12, 2006

Of the four books in the series, I feel that this one is the best. Troop manages to give it a mobster movie feel while maintaining the traditional fantasy edge. This series just keeps getting better. I certainly hope that Troop continues to write about our favorite dragon. I will certainly be there to plop down my money for any future books! This is one of the most orginal treatments of dragons I have ever encountered. Even the secondary characters are developed so strongly that you feel like you know them. A wonderful read.
