Walking into the theater, I wasn't really sure what to expect from the music side of things. Antonio Pinto? Who's that? So I watch, listen, and immediately fall in love with the 7-chord theme that dominates the entirety of the score. I later looked up what else Pinto composed, and much to my expectation, he's done a lot of documentary work. You know when you watch a documentary, and there are some of those rare moments while watching when you notice how amazing the music is, usually very vague-sounding, and mostly just very cadential chord progressions that immediately satisfy your ears? "The Host" is just that... and more, actually.

Without getting too much into what the film is about, a lot of this score is electronic. If anything, the guitar solos and accompaniment to some of the more intimate, romantic cues are the only thing heard from a real instrument. But that doesn't take away from the beauty of how it sounds. It all depends on how the composer masters the computer side, and Pinto pulls it off.

Personally, my favorite cues are "Soul Mates," "Into the Cave," "Sun Inside," and "Soul Outside," which all (obviously) employ the basic romance theme. Though, as a listenable soundtrack, it does get a bit tedious to hear some of the more dissonant cues made up completely from electronic synthesizers, and no real tune, it's mostly just about imagination. My favorite of those types would probably be "Healing," which I only slightly enjoy because I remember the scene during the cue.

You may have enjoyed the film in its romantic emotion-charged drama, creating a sense of suspense and intrigue while holding to a storyline that employed many personal struggles about romance that we think on often.

And I mean that in a good way. Though the movie wasn't as great as the book, the score is its own entity that deserves praise. It's truly a beautiful, almost "gentle" score, with it's varios tones, melodies, and stringed instruments to make it feel very fantastical. This is pretty much why it quickly became my favorite bit of sound to listen to before I fall asleep. If memory serves, the tracks play in the order you hear from the movie, which is always appreciated. There's such a lush variety of soothing beats in this score, it's hard to really pick a favorite track, as they all offer their own type of beauty.

Each track is its own reward to listen to, but I'm partial to "Outer Space, Soul Inside, Into the Cave, Soul Outside, Sun Inside, Dying Soul, and Goodbye Wanderer."

Put simply, if you like subtle tones for your score, this one's for you.

The movie may not have been amazing, but the soundtrack is great. It's beautiful and emotional without needing too much power. The main theme in particular is just beautiful. Even if you hated the movie, give the soundtrack a try. Some of my favorite tracks include:

Soul Inside
Soul Mates
Inside the Cave
Sun Inside
Soul Outside
One Strange World

I am a fan of having things simple and straight forward sometimes, and this official orchestral soundtrack for "The Host" is no exception. Beautiful melodies, haunting strings, subtle guitar, and an occasional tension created for those scenes in the film that needed it, the music truly enhanced and brought out the emotion the sequence is intended to bring to the listener. This is the kind of music I put the headphones on, light a few candles, turn off the lights, sit back, relax, and just let my mind be swept away in the lyricism of Antonio Pinto's score, picturing every moment from the film as I do. Great stuff and again, I feel the magic is in its simplicity.
