Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In 1941, at age 13, the author was taken from her small town near Leningrad and sent to Germany for three years of forced labor. PW said that while "the writing itself suffers from being squeezed into an artificial diary format... the story relayed here is intrinsically compelling." Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up. Written in the form of a diary, this memoir relates the struggle of a Russian adolescent to survive during World War II. Wassiljewa was barely 14 and living close to starvation in a small, German-occupied town 60 kilometers from Leningrad when she was sent to do forced labor in Germany. Her story is gripping and a grim reminder of the horrors war imposes on civilian populations. While frankly describing the brutality of the living and working conditions, she does not neglect to note the kindnesses of individuals, including Germans who on occasion alleviated her suffering, sometimes at great personal risk. The greatest irony of her story is the suspicion with which those young people who had struggled so valiantly to survive in the enemy's land were treated when they returned to their homeland. Too young to have a passport before the war, Wassiljewa was denied an identity certificate that would allow her to continue her schooling after her return. Serendipity resolved her situation but not of many others like her who were sent to Soviet prison camps. The book was published in the Soviet Union in 1990, but this edition was done from a German translation published in 1994. This double translation and the use of the German transliteration of Russian names may account for some awkwardness. The writing is not always as engaging as the story itself, and the historical endnote has some errors. Nonetheless, Hostage is a welcome addition to the literature about World War II because of its unique viewpoint.?Elizabeth Talbot, University of Illinois, Champaign

5.0 out of 5 stars Hostage to War, March 7, 2000
Never have we read a book filled with so much bravery, adventure, wickedness, love, and hard time. This book combines them all into a true story of a girl named Tatjana Wassiljewa. Hostage to War, a true story translated from Russian to English, is a wonderful action packed adventure story. The story starts out when a young girl around the age of 13, and her mother, father, (who has ulcers), and her 2 year old sister, Olja leave from their rented dacha in Wyritza to escape bomb attacks. They have nothing left except their love. Their dacha has been smashed, but Tatjana still has her important journal. Tatjana kept a diary first called, "A Diary of Happy Days." In the end, it starts telling everything. If WW II interests you, this book may be a start to learning more. Even though Tatjana and her family aren't Jewish, the story entails the life of other Jewish people Tatjana met. The Diary of a Young girl, Anne Frank, takes place in about the same time period, but deals with a Jewish girl. We enjoyed the entries in the Hostage to War more than this book. Another book, The Devils Arithmetic is a story about a girl who opens the door for Elohim, and is transformed into Chaya, a Jewish girl from the past. That book explains the life of Jews in an exciting, realistic, fictional way. Both stories are riviting. Tatjana is a persistent, strong, young woman that caught our attention. Her story will interest the minds of others as well. J.D.L. and A.B.
