This book's size and weight and title give a false impression that it will be full of hostel listings. Nothing could be further from the truth. In order to be a thick book this book is printed in large print, you know the type elderly people or those with visual problems borrow from the library. And what is the point of this when travellers have to lug this thing around an entire continent? Do the publishers think backpackers would want something made heavier and that would takes up more space? Makes you wonder if these actually were backpackers who wrote this and not instead people who travelled everywhere by car, knocked on the doors of hostels they knew about (there's a lot of hostels missing from each city or town, the majority listed are Hostelling International brand ones) and said, "hi, we're writing a book on hostels do you mind if we have a look around" before going back to their hotels to sleep the night. This means there whole opinion paragraphs accompanying each hostel mean, jack s.

Pretty much every country in this book has just one city listed. The only travellers who only spend 5 minutes in one country are Contiki type tourists who have all their accommodation arranged for them, therefore would not need this book. Even major backpacker destinations such as Salzburg in Austria, Bruges in Belgium, Cesky Krumlov in Czech Republic, Nice in France, Killarney, Cork and so on Ireland, are all left out for some reason. In fact the absurdity of this book is highlighted by the fact that the cover has a picture of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, yet all the hostels in the town of Pisa are left out completely, in fact Pisa isn't mentioned at all. As left out are other great lesser visited cities in those countries. Entire countries in Europe are missed out all together, Finland, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Liechtenstein, Northern Ireland and there's heaps more, are examples of countries that are located in Europe but not inside this book.
