Editorial Reviews

Isengard was a solo project set up by Fenriz of Darkthrone in the late 1980's which began more as a death metal project and evolved into a large mix of styles, incorporating elements of doom, rock, death, black metal and folk. 'H stm rke', meaning Autumn Darkness, was the second Isengard album. It was released in 1995 and featured a continuation of Norwegian folk elements mixed with some doom, with all instruments once again performed by Fenriz himself. The latter part of the album also features a couple of black metal tracks which explore territory a bit more in line with Darkthrone, particularly the track 'Total Death'. H stm rke is also notable for featuring a couple of small guest appearances from Aldrahn (Thorns, ex D dheimsgard) and Vicotnik of D dheimsgard. This new edition of 'H stm rke' contains a special commentary disc conducted by Fenriz and reflecting on the recording process, as well as an insight into the time of the recording. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Folk black metal from Fenriz., September 15, 2001

Brilliant and excellent album! Isengard is actually a solo project of Darkthrone's drummer Fenriz. This "Hostmorke" album is really a masterpiece of black metal art. Combining folk elements with raw cold metal, Fenriz created a wonderful concept of his Isengard.

First five songs are real Norse pagan songs. The last two are old Darkthrone ones, which Fenriz released on "Hostmorke". The are, too, great! "I Kamp Med Hvite Krist" is a great marching sound. Fenriz's vocals here are congenial, as in every song of this album. "Over De Syngende Ode Moer" is a long and slow, but fascinatingly enchanting song. It is better to be prformed in the cave. That's what I thought after hearing that track.

Vocals are clean and strong. I am fascinated by Fenriz's superb vocals. Guitars, basses and drums are real good. Production reminds somewhat a raw demo sound, but that's what Fenriz wanted "Hostmorke" to be. Raw and grim.
I recommend it as a true masterpiece.

Landet Og Havet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fenris puts out a masterpiece!, January 19, 2005

When I heard this album, I found a totally new, powerful sound, that clubbed me in the face with an inverted cross and told me whos boss. Aside from the 2 Darkthrone songs, the album features strong, Scandanivian riffs and brutal viking vocals, mixing together to form some of the best songs I've ever heard. This has been in my car for a good 3 months now, only taking a break for the other Isengard cd. BUY THIS NOW!!! and Vinterskugge too!
