5.0 out of 5 stars Folk black metal from Fenriz., September 15, 2001

Brilliant and excellent album! Isengard is actually a solo project of Darkthrone's drummer Fenriz. This "Hostmorke" album is really a masterpiece of black metal art. Combining folk elements with raw cold metal, Fenriz created a wonderful concept of his Isengard.

First five songs are real Norse pagan songs. The last two are old Darkthrone ones, which Fenriz released on "Hostmorke". The are, too, great! "I Kamp Med Hvite Krist" is a great marching sound. Fenriz's vocals here are congenial, as in every song of this album. "Over De Syngende Ode Moer" is a long and slow, but fascinatingly enchanting song. It is better to be prformed in the cave. That's what I thought after hearing that track.

Vocals are clean and strong. I am fascinated by Fenriz's superb vocals. Guitars, basses and drums are real good. Production reminds somewhat a raw demo sound, but that's what Fenriz wanted "Hostmorke" to be. Raw and grim.
I recommend it as a true masterpiece.

Landet Og Havet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fenris puts out a masterpiece!, January 19, 2005

When I heard this album, I found a totally new, powerful sound, that clubbed me in the face with an inverted cross and told me whos boss. Aside from the 2 Darkthrone songs, the album features strong, Scandanivian riffs and brutal viking vocals, mixing together to form some of the best songs I've ever heard. This has been in my car for a good 3 months now, only taking a break for the other Isengard cd. BUY THIS NOW!!! and Vinterskugge too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fenriz makes great folk metal and black metal!, January 2, 2003

This album is even better than "Vinterskugge". Fenriz has an impressive voice, both grim and clean. The first five tracks are folk metal, and is probably the best ones. "I kamp med kvitekrist" has got very nice lyrics, and the patriotic "Landet og Havet" is a beautiful track with no instruments. The last two tracks is quality black metal, in Darkthrone-style. The vocals are surprisingly well here, too. Fenriz has got [great], raging vocals, that almost matches Nocturno Culto's.
This album should appeal to any black metal fan. Great stuff...

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank the (Dark) Lord I own this.., December 2, 2006
This review is from: Hostmorke (Audio CD)
...or does it own me? I think it does. Isengard. Yum! Awesome album, not your thrashie black metal, but a must pwn for Darkthrone fans. The last two tracks are (more or less) unholy uberkvlt epic elite black metal with some amazing vokills. The first five are, I guess we now call it folk metal or viking metal...whatever the label is the music is atmospheric and haunting. I prefer Vinterskugge, but that might be because when I first heard that album it was at the height of the black metal "explosion" and songs like Storm of Evil were so different to anything Darkthrone brought out, Vinterskugge just screamed, or screams, originality and a man (Fenriz) who has unlimited talent in the musical field. This album isn't far removed from Vinterskugge, but, through no fault of its own, it didnt have the same impact on me. I do like the production on this one far better than Vinterskugge, in other words it actually HAS some production. Vinterskugge being a wee step above a bunch of demo tapes thrown together. Hostemorke by Isengard is kvlt in the troo sense of the word. It is, an all joking aside here, epic and elite.

Buy this if you want something to hand down to the kids..."Son, this is my Isengard album...cherish it as I cherished your mum on Saturday nights when I had drunk WAY too much Buckfast and I was feeling rather frisky to say the least"

Seriously, this album is a landmark in ALL metal history.

Do your part and buy this badboy, although obviously not from the un-uberkvlt Amazon, they are poseurs, they do not own this album.

Fenriz does a good job of mixing BlacK metal and FolK metal on this album. Landet Og Havet should be played first, then Neslepaks and this album sounds even better! The last two, Thornspawn Chalice and a later DarkThrone album name, Total Death, are great black metal songs Hail Satan
