Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Various and sundry works by Richard Hell (Go Now), the leader of the late '70s No Wave band the Voidoids, are assembled in Hot and Cold: Essays Poems Lyrics Notebooks Pictures Fiction. Largely previously unpublished, and typically irreverent, lewd, sublime, non-sequiturous and anti-establishment these works wrest the strange, funny and disgusting out of most situations. In an early prose poem, Hell describes a bestiality fantasy; in a notebook entry, he describes a meeting with an ailing William Burroughs. Neo-punks and the alternative "whatever" crowd will enjoy this beautifully printed document of overlapping sub-cultures.

... From the beginning, Richard Hell has burned with the same blue flame of misfit insight and desperate beauty. -- Jerry Stahl in Bookforum

Format: Hardcover
Richard Hell's writing has the effect of stopping me dead in my tracks after every third sentence or so, to accommodate some new point of view, or hallucinatory image, or just to laugh at the sheer madness of it. I particularly enjoyed the open-hearted, wickedly truthful eulogies (of Johnny Thunders, and other fallen comrades ), the journal entries, and ~ the song lyrics are all here as well. Along with his full-length novel 'Go Now', this is essential Hell - and the drawings and photos are a bonus(and, probably ensure that you won't be finding a copy at the county library!).
