Coloring Book + Tiny Textbook = Painless learning, July 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hot Blood: The Emergence of Mammals (Part 1) The Pelycosaurs (Paperback)
'Hot Blood', despite the title and the gaping pelycosaur on the cover isn't a Jurassic Park ripoff by any means. So if that's what you're looking for, save your money (but not much money - check the price..). Instead, it's a very well put together combination of coloring book and text (sort of like a Zoology text for kids) that both shows how this family evolved and how they (supposedly) worked. The latter is described in a form that reminded me of my old Romer + Parsons undergrad text, but this is a lot more fun. I have a 5 year old boy who has loved 2 of them to small pieces. First time thru was the coloring; then cutting them out. You might want to take advantage of the authors' copyright that allows you to make copies of the pages for personal use - and some of the halftones are so ncely done that it seemed a shame to 'waste' them on a 5 year-old, but it was hardly wasted. Good kids books are rare; good cheap ones are rarer; good ones that are so cheap that you can chop them up...? my $0.02 hjm
