Format: Hardcover
I got this book when I was about 10 years old. My parents were afraid that it might be too cerebral for me, but instead I found it exciting, very detailed and full of stuff I had no idea about. Adrian J Desmond tells the story of dinosaur discoveries and the development of the science of paleontology with great flair. He's a very good storyteller and goes into the rivalry and drama so often played out among the pioneers of this field. The book also contains an excellent selection of images from older publications, some of them showing the first attempts to reconstruct prehistoric animals. I highly recommend this book for anyone even slightly interested in the history of "dinosaur science". It's an intelligent and comprehensive read.

Like other reviewers, I too was fascinated by dinosaurs as a child, and remain so as an adult. The Hot Blooded Dinosaurs was one of my favorite books growing up. Mr. Desmond brings history, physiology and other sciences together in an easy to understand book, challenging the old idea that dinosaurs were slow, dull creatures. As a student of Biology, I remember questioning why Sauropods would drag their huge tails on the ground (ouch). And the therapods were definitely built for speed. Why would animals built for an active life be labeled as ectothermic? The Hot Blooded Dinosaurs builds an interesting case by looking at these specialized animals in a new light. Follow The Hot Blooded Dinosaurs with The Dinosaur Heresies by Robert Bakker, Ph.D. Your middle school student will like The Hot Blooded Dinosaurs as much as an adult. I purchased this book in hard cover as my original is literally in tatters from years of reading. Can't wait for it to be delivered so I can re-read an old favorite.

Our understanding of history and technology is constantly changing. At one time the Maya Indians were thought to be peaceful people and we ignored all their bloody pictures.

This information is a tad dated but the book "the hot-blooded dinosaurs" by Adrian J. Desmond was one of those books that changed our understanding and was a revolution in paleontology.

The premise of this book is the theory that dinosaurs were warm-blooded creatures. It sets out methodically to show why this was so.

Contents:
1 - the crown of creation
2 - the tyrant finds its feet
3 - the race is to the swift, the battle to the strong
4 - the dark ages
5 - stranding of the Titans
6 - a Griffin rescues evolution
7 - phantoms from hell
8 - the coming of Armageddon: a cosmic cataclysm?

The book contains drawings of what the dinosaurs would look like and actually pictures of their skeletons.

I remember I read this book in 1981 and from there on I am convinced that the dinosaurs must have been hot blooded. Some more evidence wich Mr. desmond did not have at that time seemes to point into the same direction. So by the fact that till today you can find tv progamms, articles and books in wich the dinosaurs are called rectiles this books keeps being avant garde. And when they all will have learned the lesson of this book it will be a classic. I recomend this very highly.
