5.0 out of 5 stars A great power pop album by an underappreciated band, June 5, 2000
By
This review is from: Hot Boxing (Audio CD)
Magnapop was a band that came out of the Athens/Atlanta scene during the early 90's. The band is probably most famous for their collaboration with such celebrated alternative figures as Micheal Stipe who produced the bands first album and Bob Mould who produced Hot Boxing.

This album is essentially a power pop album and draws alot from punk rock. But where Magnapop's brillance lies in their ability to combine punk asthetics with pop. Even guitarist Ruthie Morris, who wrote most of the music for this band has been quoted as saying "Pop is where it's at". Most of the songs on this disk are short catchy power pop songs. Highlights include "Skinburns", "Slowly, Slowly", and "The Crush".

It is a shame that this band was droped by Priority records sometime in the mid-90's. Ever since then the band has produced nothing and has led me to speculate that the band may have broken up. Even though Magnapop have not produced any material after their "Rubbing Doesn't Help" album, "Hot Boxing" serves as Magnapop's best and what this band could produce.

This album was produce for Bob Mould (yes, the same person that you listen in Husker Du; Sugar a his solo project), he was a good job, the powerfull songs, powerfull riff guitars and sweet vocals make a great cd. You must buy if you like the old spirit of punk rock like Ramones, Clash or Buzzcocks.
