Editorial Reviews

2012 release, the third album from the British Glam/Hard Rock band and their first album in seven years. Featuring all four original members, The Darkness are back with a vengeance. Hot Cakes was produced by band members Justin and Dan Hawkins, and Nick Brine. It was mixed by Bob Ezrin.

This album will remind you what great rock music sounds like...at a time when terrible pop music rules the radio.

I was skeptical of how 'good' a new Darkness album would be after the long hiatus/breakup and after reading a few early reviews leading me to expect a lackluster third album...but thank goodness it was all a bad dream:).

For the record, I am a huge fan of The Darkness. Permission to Land is one of my favorite albums. I think One Way Ticket to Hell and Back is an amazing album too (for different reasons), but it missed the mark in many aspects. I really enjoyed the Justin Hawkins solo efforts, but I was worried about a "reunion" album/tour.

I've only had a chance to listen to the album once through (it was just released this morning)...but so far, I loved it instantly, which is a VERY good sign for me. Even at 15 tracks (get the .mp3 album and you get four more songs!), the time flew by. Time will tell if I enjoy it as much as Permission to Land, but it certainly has potential. I do agree with the reviewers who said it is basically more of "The Darkness" so you know what you're getting, but it feels like the band has found the perfect mix between the sounds of their Permission to Land and One Way Ticket albums. If you didn't like The Darkness before, this album won't convince you either, but for those of us who do, they've given us a fantastic album and it is SO much better than I expected. At $7.99 (as of 8/21/12) for the 15 track .mp3 album, it is a steal so do yourself a favor and get it!

UPDATE (08/23/12) - I've had a chance to listen to the album many times now and I can say that while I still prefer the superior 'Permission to Land' (which would be hard to top, let's be honest), Hot Cakes comes a close second and feels like a great sequel to that album.

After a lengthy lay-off and some side projects from all corners The Darkness are back. After a solid weeks listening I feel I'm able to give an appropriate review. I see some reviews here posted the day of or the day after the release and this isn't an album that grabs you straight away.

Should they have bothered? Of course they should have.
Have they triumphed? Kind of

One Way Ticket has been my favourite of the two Darkness albums so far. I loved the Queen influences and it was a perfect mix of rock and pop.

Permission To Land, for me, was a great album but some of the songs didn't hit the mark for me - Black Shuck and the two `Love...' ballads. This album was supposed to be a return to that rawer sound but to me it doesn't sound like PTL at all.

With Hot Cakes we find The Darkness in a mature, reflective mode, which for The Darkness, isn't necessarily a good thing. Not that it's a bad thing either. Bands mature and change sound but in doing so rarely exceed the likeability of their `old stuff'.

I very much wanted to love Hot Cakes and unfortunately I don't. It was never going to be better than One Way Ticket for me and I wasn't expecting it to be. I think what's missing here is a bit of that Darkness magic. Too often it doesn't feel like a Darkness album.
I could only give one track an A-. The bulk of the rest are B's and B+'s.

Many of the songs are often in the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/slow chorus/chorus format - which so many songs are this past decade. Throw in the odd uninspired guitar solo (there's nothing sounding remotely like Brian May on this one) and you have too many underwhelming songs. Maybe it's my own high expectations at fault.

You get what you think you're gonna get. Pure Rock Madness. Awesome album from the band that has saved rock and roll.

Really glad I picked up on these guys. Enjoyed both of there other releases, but they are certainly a bit more mature sounding here. Each song is very good and several are addicting. You clearly hear elements of ACDC, Thin Lizzy, and even the Beatles in many of the songs. If you are looking for a classic guitar rock sound done right and fresh or just want a straight ahead " in your face" sound that ROCKS, without over engineering or deep lyrics, than this is for you! simple straight forward Guitar rock. My favorite cd of 2012 by far! Hope they tour the states soon!
