Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-In a story told in rap rhyme, Maria reaches into the cookie jar and finds the lost key to the playground. She and her friends go there and joyfully slide, see-saw, and roller skate. After a time, their parents come and join them in their games. The lively children and adults portrayed in watercolor and line move across the pages as they jump and swing and run in their games. The rhyme is bumpy; it helps to read it aloud, but it never becomes as crisp as Bill Martin's Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (S & S, 1989), which has a similar beat. Eventually the key is returned to the cookie jar and the playground gate is left open. Readers never know how or why the key was lost or why one of the adults didn't have another but the gleeful children certainly don't seem concerned. An additional title.

This review is from: Hot Cha-Cha (Hardcover)
The concept of who, what, why, when, where, and how is featured in this rollicking story told in the form of a rhythmic chant. Kids in a neighborhood find a key to a locked playground and have a great time. Parents soon join in the fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful re-released classic of poetic storytelling, March 20, 2010
This review is from: Hot Cha Cha! (Hardcover)
"Hot Cha Cha" is a delightful re-released classic of poetic storytelling that answers the "5 W's and How" questions with vivid flair and style. The poetics are impeccable, the story is unforgettable, and the pictures are practically edible! Well, this humble attempt at doggerel does not do justice to the rollicking rhythms of "Hot Cha Cha," of course, but it really does present a fabulous combo of poetry, color, and motion cleverly packaged in a great little story jingle song. Even more intriguing is the hidden or secret message about poetry discussion and reading/learning tips printed on the underside of the book jacket. "Hot Cha Cha" is a great book for kids of all ages and also a great teaching resource for the dreaded poetry unit. Parents, teachers, librarians, and kids will love "Hot Cha Cha" so much they won't even know they are learning and chanting poetry.
