The Winner In Me

Cheryl “Coko” Clemons returns to the music scene with a truly distinctive body of work that reveals an intimate portrait of her heart and her love for God. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good cd, same sounds December 25, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
"Hot Coko" is a good debut from former SWV lead vocalist Coko. The album offers traditional R&B tracks such as "Bigger Than We" and "Everytime" and nice fast uptempo songs like "Triflin'" and "Don't Take Your Love Away". Although some of the songs are quite original, they still have similar topics like most songs, but despite the repetition, it is still a good album. Coko has great vocals and nice production, most of which provided by super-producer Rodney Jerkins. If you're looking for a nice R&B album, then "Hot Coko" is a good choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Coko like you never had before.........Blazing! December 15, 1999
By I.B.
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best new female solo R+B joints to drop for 99. The bad thing is that she isn't getting the promo she should have...it's almost like no one knows....but they do. For those who don't...let me tell u what your missing: Hot coko is coko's debeut as a solo artist from the group SWV. She was the most heard voice in the group so it's almost as if she never left the group ....but almost that the group left her. The tracks here are blazing from the start. The intro with her son calling her......up to the last song will have u singing along or at least trying if not pressing repeat to hear it again. The best cuts here are: 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,10,. Overall every track is good and u might have this in your car for a while. The track "You and me" has a beat that goes from fast to slow that will grab u from the time it starts. It also has some smooth jams here like 10, and 5 that should be one of her next singles. The lyrics show where coko is right now...and u can see what shes says coming from her. This cd is Hot!....and before this coko cools off...best thing to do is listen while it's hot....which should be a while....once u listen u will see what i'm talking about.
Don't think about it.....Get it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked and Underrated. November 25, 2002
Format:Audio CD
When Coko's solo debut, "Hot Coko," was released in the summer of 1999, it was all but ignored by the very listeners who made SWV's three studio albums platinum successes. That's rather strange, since this is an overall solid album that has as much bang as any of Coko's hits with the now-defunct all-girl group. With production from Rodney Jerkins and Brian Alexander Morgan, "Hot Coko" delivers a fine mix of contemporary r&b. The hit single "Sunshine" is an upbeat love song produced by Jerkins, while Eve hops on as a guest for "Trifilin'." And Coko makes her feelings abundantly clear to a soon-to-be-ex in "I Ain't Feelin' You." There are a couple ballads that drag along, failing to come up with a slow jam as winning as 1993's "Weak." Still, this disc deserves a second chance to be heard. It won't change the future of r&b, but it's a lot better than much of the slicked-up dreck that often clogs up the airwaves.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good debut that's almost cliche free March 1, 2000
Format:Audio CD
"Hot Coko" is a fine debut. The album has an apparent modern sound to it, but Coko doesn't use too many studio "tricks" that are popular now with R&B and rap artists. Only the blips that rumble through "I Ain't Feelin' You" and her computer-altered singing in "Don't Take Your Love Away" are the moments on the album marked with silly sounds that's expected of R&B artists today. Otherwise, Coko prefers style & grace. There are some great multi-tracked harmonies throughout the album, especially on the upbeat "Sunshine", which is guaranteed to make you feel good. While other female R&B singers are loading their albums with hateful "I'm-kickin'-you-out-the-door" tunes, Coko limits herself in that area and instead delivers her music in a more classy, subtle manner. Even the album cover seems like a reference to the 70's heyday of R&B and soul music.
Unfortunately, one of today's cliches is that there must be a guest rap on the album. Eve supplies a well-delivered but unecessary rap during the intro to "Triflin". For her next album, let's hope Coko digs even deeper into her gospel roots. This album hints that it could've been even better than it already is, but overall "Hot Coko" is an enjoyable & respectable record. Recommended for fans of classic R&B (and much closer to classic than a lot of other junk out there).

3.0 out of 5 stars Hot Coko is only warm February 7, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
thought Coko might want to distinguish herself from the "SWV" sound and really heat up on her own. The production is very formulaic and she does nothing to differentiate herself from the other "girl" R&B singers and her name alone should have been enough to start that. the material is just weak. The duet with Tyrese might have been better had they chose their own direction and not tried to replicate the style of Luther and Cheryl Lynn's version, a version which is untouchable. In conclusion, her vocals haven't changed much either -- same off pitch soprano on the verge of shouting. he voice is best when she sings in a slightly lower register.
