"Hot Dog" Rates #1 in my Classroom!,
This review is from: Hot Dog (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
I have begun to use these Road to Reading books in my resource classroom and the students love them. They especially loved Hot Dog. Many of the words are on the state mandated word lists for K-2. The pictures are terrific and the story is interesting and funny to the kids. I thought it was great too-in fact we all fell in love with the little "Hot Dog".

Fun Story,

This review is from: Hot Dog (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher and I introduced this story to my class on the first day of school after we get in from the playground. They love it and relate to the hot little dog in the story.
This book is ideal for a child and an adult to sit and read together. It has predictable and easy words and the kids have fun watching the dog do anything to cool off on a hot day. When I read it to the class, they enjoy it so much they take it from storytime and read it themselves. This is the kind of book that inspires young people to have a love for reading. They realize that reading is fun and can be easy too. This book was favorite from the first day.

The illustrations in this book are hilarious, The text is perfect for children that are just starting to read.Simple one syllable words with two to three words per page. But the best part of this book is the illustrations, I just love them. The dog spends the entire book hot and trying to cool off. Every attempt he makes fails until the very end. You find your yourself rooting for the dog. This is one of my son't favorite books, he wants to read it every night.

Doesn't Translate to Kindle Well,

My 5 year old daughter sees me reading on my Kindle and as she is just now learning to read, she likes to read on my Kindle too. I had purchased Big Egg for Kindle and we both loved it so when she wanted more, I thought Hot Dog would be a good choice as it was well reviewed and sounded good. The content and pictures are great, but what doesn't work well on the e-version, is the text and formating. It is difficult for the early reader to find the text, and some pages are blank which causes delays and disinterest in the child. I do think this would be a great book in paperback just not so great in the e-version. If you are looking for something to share your Kindle with your young reader, I would suggest trying Big Egg first (at the time of this review it is only $0.88 for the Kindle version).

I am a first grade teacher, looking for books for my small reading groups. I decided not to order this one* but will keep the one copy in my library. Most my students should be able to read it independently & I think they'll find it funny. (I wasn't wild about a phrase written as a sentence in the book: In the pool.)
* I liked these better for groups: Big Egg/ Step into Rdg. Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill/ Step into Rdg. Big Brown Bear/ Green Light Readers

This book was the first one our daughter (4) read by herself. It's pretty good and is at the level of the old "see spot run" books. It's about thirty pages and has nice color pictures.

Excellent early reader!,

I purchased these books for my 5-year-old daughter who is beginning to read and these Step Into Reading books are excellent as they have a high-interest factor that motivates her to read. The stories are also wonderfully illustrated in full color. The story here is of an adorable dachschund which is desperate to cool off but all his attempts to cool off fail. He encounters a pig, a skunk, and many other animals and people who aren't willing to help him cool off, or just don't care, until he comes upon a little girl in a pool.
These Step 1 series are recommended for preschool-K - the stories are in large type and the vocabulary is easy. The stories are also in a rhyming format which makes them easy and fun to read, e.g. "Dog is hot, sheep are not. Shoo, shoo, Dog." The full color pictures also provide contextual clues as to the word being used in the text. These early readers have raised my daughter's confidence level in reading, and she is doing so well that I'm purchasing the Step Two books (Preschool-Grade 1). I use these books in conjunction with sight words to reinforce her recognition of common vocabulary.

great first reader, cute book,
This review is from: Hot Dog (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
My daughter enjoyed reading this. It is a great book for an emerging reader, basically short vowels and simple letter combinations, repetition, nice illustrations. This whole series (step into reading) really beats out the other series' for me - the level 1 books seem to be truly level 1. Their boxed sets are quite nice as well.

My son is five, a spanking brand new reader, lovvveesss to read, but was absolutely bored with this. We have read many and plenty more books that recycle the same ten or so simple words but in a more creative manner. This was awful. I was tempted to tell Amazon that I purchased it by mistake and get a refund.

My four-year-old son soon will be learning his first site words in school. I got all excited and ordered him several books from Amazon. This book is PERFECT. I purchased others at the same "level" of reading (like the Nemo one, the Cars 2 one, etc), but they had little to no repetition, and they used complex words (like "caught") and long words (like "different") for a child just learning his first words. Hot Dog has short simple words along with repetition/rhyming and clues in the pictures so my son can read the whole book on his own. Not always exactly word-for-word, but close! I ask him to read it to me on the way to school, and he's so proud to be reading a story to me. This is a real confidence booster, even before his class officially begins learning site words! It goes something like this: Dog is hot.(next page) Mom is not.(next page) Shoo dog! (next page) Dog is hot.(next page) Cat is not.(next page) Shhhhh dog! (next page) |
