Book Description

November 1, 2006
Labradoodles, Pugaliers, Schnoodles, Cockapoos, Spanadors, Dorgis--maybe they aren't recognized by the AKC but they're here! Hot Dogs: Fourteen Top Designer Dogs takes a close-up look at the wide range of new dogs that have come into existence as breeders have carefully selected canines of different pedigrees for mating. Entries have been separately written by a team of experts, each versed on a specific designer breed. This book gives dog lovers a practical guide to choosing a designer breed that suits any one among a variety of tastes and lifestyles. Among these new breeds are dogs that love working with people, inside-the-house dogs that don't shed, dogs that are especially good with cats, and many others. Filled with intriguing color photos of dogs that are like none you've seen before.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

(back cover)
In the 1980s an Australian dog breeder decided to cross the gentle, friendly Labrador with the intelligent, low-shedding Poodle to produce a guide dog suitable for allergy sufferers. It was a very successful example of planned and logical crossbreeding, and since then, "designer dogs" have been in great demand.

As well as the popular Labradoodle, Hot Dogs! takes a look at the wide range of modern "crossbreeds" available, such as Cockapoos, Goldendoodles, Schnoodles, Puggles, Pekapoos, Cavachons, and Yorkiepoos. This book is a practical guide to choosing the dog that meets your special needs (including dogs that love working with people, dogs of all sizes that are good with children, and low-shedding dogs for indoors) and caring for it. Find a special breed that's right for you and your family.

Great pictures, and just enough information to give an informed idea to make a decision. The Goldendoddle was the star of the book, how handsome and he works as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource Book on Mixed Breed Dogs, August 2, 2008

This review is from: Hot Dogs: Fourteen of the Top Designer Dogs (Paperback)
This a fantastic resource for anyone interested in a dog like a goldendoodle, labradoodle, schnoodle, puggle, cockapoo or other mixed breed dog (14 in total are described). The book describes the general behavior of the dog, activity level, how much they tend to bark, how they are with children, how trainable they are, the usual appearance of the dog, typical sizes, types of health issues common to that particular dog mix and other helpful information. Each description of the dogs is accompanied by multiple color photos. It has an excellent explanation of different breeding terms like F1, F1b, F2 and mixed generations (which comes up a lot when purchasing a mixed breed dog and is essential to understand so you understand what you are getting). I found this extremely useful and would highly recommend it. For purebred dog info I'd recommend the "Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds" by D. Caroline Coile.
