In Julie Calligaro's new book she presents helpful information and practical tips on managing menopausal hot flashes. It's a quick read that describes non-hormonal and non-prescription strategies for the woman who wants to exert some control over the intensity and duration of her hot flashes. The author presents research on a variety of pertinent topics, including the use of plants and plant extracts for treatment, in a straightforward, easy-to-understand manner. She offers the reader a plan and an array of possible remedies. Reading this book was two hours well-spent. It inspired me to take control and put my own personal cooling plan into action.

This review is from: Hot Flashes: 21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire (Paperback)
"Hot Flashes: 21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire" is a tool to empower women to survive menopause by giving tips to help women control their hot flashes, or 'put out the fire.' The author, Julie Calligaro, is a former nurse and practicing attorney, and an author of several other self-help books for women. In brief, Calligaro begins by suggesting that the woman begin by establishing a baseline of frequency, duration, severity, and triggers of her hot flashes, then try any or all of the following approaches: Paced breathing, regular exercise, black cohash, red clover, soy foods, acupuncture, avoidance of triggers, cessation of smoking, reduce weight until achieving a health weight, bathing/showering in tepid water, and lowering the temperature of surroundings, especially the bedroom. Additionally, these are 10 cooling strategies suggested: Wear cotton, not wool or synthetics. Dress in layers. Wear sleepwear that wicks sweat away from the skin. Carry a pocket fan. Have fans positioned around home and workplace. Meditate. Do yoga. Adjust your attitude about menopause. Use BeKool Hot Flash gel sheets for immediate cooling. Wear kleenex in your bra. Calligaro's final suggestion to the reader is to maintain regular physical checkups, pap smears, and breast exams. "Hot Flashes" is a practical manual to assist the menopausal woman to greater comfort during her change of life.

I've been bothered by hot flashes on and off for quite some time and I've been looking for safe but effective ways to reduce them. Julie Calligaro's book has been a huge help to me. The information is clearly written and easy to understand. The methods she describes to reduce hot flashes and the tips she includes to make flashes easier to bear are excellent.

Hot Flashes 21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire is the book to have if you are struggling with Hot Flashes. After taking HRT for many years to control my hot flashes, I was told by my doctor that I would have to stop the medication and just deal with hot flashes. They returned with a vengeance, just as they had for the author, Julie Calligaro. Well, just dealing with them is easier said than done. So, a big thank you to Ms. Calligaro for her comprehensive book on safe and effective strategies to combat Hot Flashes. I am now very cool.

This review is from: Hot Flashes: 21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire (Paperback)
This book changed my life. With several simple, safe and inexpensive steps I now feel more in control of my hot flashes. I ordered the nightclothes recommended and now sleep better than I have in quite some time. Most importantly I re-evaluated my outlook on this major life change and found that merely changing my attitude has made a difference. I have recommended this book to many of my friends and family.
