5.0 out of 5 stars More Grammar Please!
What a great book for teaching grammar. Very anectodal ways to teach grammar to even 8th graders. The book is nicely organized and instructions are clear. The author used a fair amount of creativity to feed grammar to students with a spoonful of sugar! Definitely worth having in a library.

2.0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there
This book is nothing but a collection of worksheets to "practice" the parts of speech. The subject matter of the worksheets is a little out of the ordinary, but nothing extraordinarily creative. Each part of speech is handled separately; there's no mixed review. Unless you're planning to spend an extensive amount of time on each part of speech and can't think of how...

5.0 out of 5 stars a grammar book that teachers and students actually like, March 9, 2000

This book is definitely not boring, even if it is about grammar. It doesn't just teach about more effective verbs, students learn how to use Five Hundred Horsepower verbs. It teaches independent clauses by having students write about people picking their noses -- just the kind of gross stuff kids like. This book is a must for anyone stuck with teaching the parts of speech.

If you are a teacher struggling to make grammar interesting and relevant to your students, while also trying to follow an established curriculum (and not work yourself to death in the process) do not hesitate to buy this book! I am a first-year teacher struggling to find a compromise between how I have to teach and how I know I should be teaching--and this book is it! While it appears to be simply a book full of grammar worksheets ('yippie' shouts the administration), it really is a back door to teaching grammar in the context of writing ('woo hoo' exclaims the English teacher). Each exercise is intended to teach concrete grammar rules and skills as well as to apply these new skills to the writing process. It is a collection of the excellent, creative kinds of activities I would come up with myself--if only I had the time!

This is a wonderful book to use with students who are resistant to learning grammar! (Which kids aren't?) The practical exercises can be used to teach and review parts of speech. Students will laugh and have fun with writing stories and playing with vivid verbs and interjections! You will love this!

I am homeschooling my 9 year old son and this book is a great resource to use. It's humor can't help but add joy and eagerness to the learning process. It's just the spark we needed to get his creative juices flowing when it comes to writing! Lessons are short and to the point with examples that clearly show what the lesson is intended to convey. I'll be using this one for awhile!!

I love reading and writing, but teaching grammar to eighth graders is just not much fun! This book is an excellant resource. The students enjoy the silly sentences and prompts given to them. The explanations are easy to follow. By eighth grade this shouldn't be new material for them. I've enjoyed using this book to refresh their memories with some of the basic concepts in grammar.

I'm not as enthusiastic about this book as the others who left ratings. It doesn't cover the topics I am focusing on this year. It's a bit advanced for my seventh graders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Fudge Monday, August 29, 2008
As a high school English teacher of almost thirty years, I bought Hot Fudge Monday: Tasty Ways to Teach Parts of Speech to Students Who Have a Hard Time Swallowing Anything to Do with Grammar from Amazon.com, and I loved it from the first time I used it in class. I work with gifted ninth graders, so I adapted the topics for our purposes. My students enjoyed it, too. I highly recommend Hot Fudge Monday: Tasty Ways to Teach Parts of Speech to Students Who Have a Hard Time Swallowing Anything to Do with Grammar to any teacher looking for some fresh topics and ideas to make grammar fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars The title says it all!, February 5, 2008
I would give this book more stars if I could! First of all...it is spiral bound! All teacher books should be make this way. It is so easy to make nice photocopies without having to break the binding of the book.

The activities are wonderful and captivating for the students. I teach middle school learning support students who dreaded English classes. They actually look forward to sharing their papers with the class.
