5.0 out of 5 stars Enslave thy neighbor...part two, October 19, 2005
This review is from: Hot Gimmick, Vol. 2 (Paperback)

The second volume of Hot Gimmick starts out with a glimpse into Hatsumi's and Azusa's past. He had always acted as her protector, and now it seems that he wants to date her but has mistaken the dominate/ submissive aspect of her and Ryoki's relationship to be an actual intimacy. She decides to set him straight about the details and that's when he confesses his feelings by kissing her. Soon he buys her a cell phone and starts telling everyone she is his girlfriend, but there is still the matter of Ryoki to be dealt with. When Azusa and Ryoki meet with one another Azusa is getting touchy feely with another woman, and Ryoki later passes this info along to Hatsumi. This leaves her very anxious about their relationship, but she should be worried about greater things, like why Azusa really wants to date her. Ryoki gets a glimpse of Azusa's real attitude and becomes concerned, but doesn't know how to tell Hatsumi without hurting her.

Back and forth it goes, the relationships in this series. It's like a tennis ball, this person wants this one, this person wants that one. Basically the structure boils down to this... Ryoki wants Hatsumi more than he cares to admit... but she doesn't care for him in the slightest and she likes Azusa... who has ulterior motives for dating her and is really "involved" with another young woman, his business manager, Rina. Hatsumi's sister, Akane, likes Ryoki, but he doesn't care for her. Subaru, the neighbor Otaku boy, likes both Hatsumi and Akane, but they consider him only a friend... and weirdest of all is the overprotective relationship Hatsumi's older "brother" has for her... It's one giant soap opera and yet it's oh so good. I keep reading this expecting it to get lame, but it hasn't. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is engaging enough to keep me borrowing it from work. Definitely not for kids, but good for anyone else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Gimmick, Volume 2: A 180 turn, January 12, 2004
This review is from: Hot Gimmick, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
When I first read Hot Gimmick Volume 1, I wasn't quite sure what I thought of it. I liked it, but at the same time, I didn't. Then I found as time went on, I liked it more and more.
And so I began eagerly anticipating Volume 2. I was lucky enough to find a copy of it yestarday(Jan. 11) at Walden books. As soon as I saw it, I HAD to get it. It was very eager to know what would happen with the Hatsumi, Ryoki, and Azusa triangle.

The thing is, with Volume 2, I can't really say to much, because it will give it away. But lemme tell you, you will NEVER guess what you will find out. I mean it totally shocked me, but I wasn't mad at all, I was pleased.

If you thought Volume 1 was great, it aint got NOTHING on Volume 2.! I'm completely hooked now, I CAN'T wait for Volume 3 to come out(who knows when that'll be). The way this manga is, it really took it up a step. The chatacters are growing way beyond what we already know of them and turn out being completely different then what we thought, and the plot is becoming more and more intriguing. The triangle between Hatsumi, Ryoki, and Azusa is getting extremely complicated, but that's good. :D

Even if you were'nt entirely fond of Volume 1, I suggest picking up Volume 2. Its ABSOLUTELY worth EVERY single penny.! If you're let down, you must have something wrong with you. hehe Naw, just kidding. Then again..... ;)

God Bless & *Enjoy* ~Amy

4.0 out of 5 stars The Plot Thickens, February 11, 2006
By
This review is from: Hot Gimmick, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
At the end of the first manga, you had a feeling that Azusa had something up his sleeve -- but you didn't know what. Well, volume two throws you into the thick of things. It shows Hatsumi's deepening feelings for Azusa and it shows what Ryoki is like outside of the building -- he's still not the best person, but you see greater depth to him, which I love. I am really starting to like him even though he is still a little evil at heart. You can tell he has some feelings for Hatsumi, but you're not sure exactly what they are. You also see what Azusa is plotting although it's still a mystery just why he is plotting Hatsumi's downfall. You also learn a big secret about Shinogu, Hatsumi's older brother.

Over all pretty good, although I don't know how believable the plot is in some aspects -- especially the whole Azusa becomes a model just so he can have revenge part.
