Lost Latin Gem!,
By
This review is from: Hot Hands (Audio CD)
Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and Poncho Sanchez are the "Holy Triumvirate" of the congas; and Ray Barretto was perhaps the most advanced in terms of edgier Latin Jazz. No music energizes more than great conguero-driven jazz. This combo album of "Ancestral Messages" and "Taboo", released in the mid-90s, is really excellent. "Taboo" is a progression on "Ancestral Messages". The main concern now is what younger Latin musicians are taking-up the slack, as these fine Latin Jazz masters gradually go to that great "Salsa Party in the Sky"? You will not regret picking this album up, and at the price - it's a really steal.
