Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In his travel guide, Hawaiian resident Penisten provides general introductory information, including helpful tips on what to pack, traveling with children, Pidgin English, weather, and more. He also covers where to stay and eat, what to see and do. Since Penisten feels the Big Island has an undeserved reputation for being a little dull, he gives locations for a wealth of air, land, and water activities. He recommends additional Hawaiiana reading, as well. Also just published by Paradise are Don and Bea Donohugh's Kauai (2d ed.), Ken Bierly's Oahu , and Greg and Christie Stilson's Maui (3d ed.). These are supplemented by quarterly newsletters for Kauai and Maui; newsletters for the Big Island and Oahu are scheduled to begin this fall ($5 per year). Though not as thorough as some Hawaii guide books, Penisten's is fun and easy to use. At this price, it will be inviting to travelers. Libraries should consider. In contrast, Runge's book focuses mostly on Hawaii's outdoor activities. He reviews swimming, scuba diving, biking, hiking, tennis, golf, and windsurfing opportunities, island by island. In about 45 pages, he covers museums, festivals, music and book stores, and other sites. Three chapters are devoted to concise information about room, board, and health clubs. Pronunciation and definitions of Hawaiian words and recommended readings close the book. Runge's outspoken macho style and youthful approach may appeal to athletic, college-age patrons bound for Hawaiian holidays. The availability of most of this information in other readily available sources, and the "gee whiz" writing make this unnecessary for most libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Hawaii book ever from a frequent Hawaii traveler., January 23, 1999
This review is from: Hot on Hawaii: The Definitive Guide to the Aloha State (Paperback)
Having been to the islands almost a dozen times over the past 12 years, my wife and I found this book to be accurate as well as humorous. Mr. Runge's personal opinions are extremely insightful and right on the mark. Just one question, why hasn't this great book been revised? Well Jon?
