Much better....,
By Beef Wellington "Tomorrow I'll Be You" (Allentown, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hot N Heavy (Audio CD)
So I've been listening to DDG since "In Vogue" which i enjoyed for the longest time but as i moved on it became very repetitive and old. Then "worse then a fairy tale" came out. ??? a very poor attempt at a concept album. Leave the concept albums to Co&Ca. WTAFT 4/10 i hated it more then i liked it. There was some classic DDG moments and also some ridiculous attempts at change and progression.
"The Hot N Heavy" Is DDG doing what they do best. Heavy, Fast, Raw, Raunchy, and Breakdowns. Any fan of "In Vogue" will be very happy. The only difference is longer more creative songs that are more then verse/chorus/breakdown. I feel this album is more DDG and less generic Metalcore/screamo/emo or whatever you wanna call it like past albums where. I gave this album 4 stars because in the end its not original. We've all heard this before its nothing new and they just realized WTAFT wasnt the way they wanted to go so they went back to their roots and polished them up and attempted to perfect them. All in all good album and i am looking forward to the perfected band we'll see on their next album....hopefully

The Hot N' Heavy,

Drop Dead, Gorgeous, in my opinion, have always wrote only decent albums. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing different or special, but decent for the genre they fall into. They aren't pushing the musical limitations by any means but usual release an album that'll have 4 or 5 good songs and a bunch of filler for the rest. They haven't changed much...
The Hot N' Heavy keeps most of the sound from their previous effort "Worse Than A Fairy Tale", which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed Fairytale thoroughly despite the uneven song quality, so I didn't see keeping elements from that sound as a bad thing. The Biggest differences on this album is that the screaming has once more dropped a peg on the forefront and singing takes more of centerstage. Dan's singing has improved drastically from previous albums and has become proficient at balancing his singing and screaming (sometimes at the same time). His screams are still the same, not much different from Be Mine, without all the distortion on the vocals. While the vocal quality has stepped up, I feel the lyric department, which has never been all that great with DDG anyways, has went down some. While not all songs on the album fall to this, there a few songs I can't even listen to due to the lyrical quality. Once again, for me this is nothing new with DDG. The keyboards have also taken a hit on this album, only used coherently in maybe 2 or 3 songs. The keyboards were always a bit under-used in DDG but they usually had some shining moment in a song or two that would give the song a good atmosphere. Not really much to be found here... I know I didn't get into the songs much but usually review the feel and atmosphere of the album. Overall I enjoy the album. Song favorites for me are: Killing a Classic-Great opening song and a good taste of the feel of the album. Two birds, One stone-First "single" from the album. Mostly all clean vocals. A bit softer than most DDG stuff but still a great introduction to danny's improved singing. Sue Simmons- Also a good tune, maybe my favorite from the disc. Not a bad album at all, just uneven as usual. Few good songs, few bad ones. Overall I'd give it a 3.5.

"In Vogue" was one of the most interesting and unique hardcore albums of its time. (If you could call their music "hardcore" or "unique" lol). Their screams were raw and something that not enough people had really heard before, which made the album a success because of its ability to stand out. This created a solid fan base and following for the band.
"Worse Then A Fairy Tail" was supposed to be a concept album if I'm correct, and in my opinion, they did it quite well. I enjoyed the lyrics mostly, they really fit the whole feeling for the album. But overall I hated it, it was nothing like the Drop Dead, Gorgeous I used to know. It was definitely different, more eerie for sure. But none the less a disappointment for a Drop Dead fan. The title says it all, "The Hot And Heavy" is WIN. This album takes the raw screams from "In Vogue" and the vocal use of "Worse Then A Fairy Tale" and creates an album that they will not be ashamed of. For me, this album is their best so far. While the thought of hiatus, losing band members, and the outrage that came from "Worse Then A Fairy Tail, they managed to create an album that will rock your socks off. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
