5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, Imaginative, Fun Images of Today's Young Stars
This book would make a great gift for the young person who follows the current popular performers and recording artists.

This book would make a great gift for the young person who follows the current popular performers and recording artists.

As the introduction says, this is "a balmy book full of heat-seeking images." It is dedicated to the proposition that "youth isn't necessarily wasted on the young." And I think they succeed.

Although I was not familiar with all of the singers, actors actresses, and sports figures photographed here, I found the images to be remarkably appealing. I was particularly impressed with the photographs by Isabel Snyder who has a great gift for bringing out emotion and unusual perspectives in her work. Clearly, if you only looked at her work, you would be highly rewarded. I particularly liked her wet reflective image of Barry Wilson, the seductive Jennifer Shy, the defiant Caspar Van Dien, and the dopey cigarette pose of Ryan Phillippe.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is one of the few subjects who appears more than once. She portrays great diversity between her humorous head shot with a candy on her tongue that reads "you melt on my tongue" by Robert Erdmann and a haunting pout in her other photograph.

Unexpected depth showed in Leonardo di Caprio's lounging on a bare mattress in a rundown room with peeling paint by Mark Seliger.

You see the seductive side of Britney Spears as captured in two photographs by David La Chapelle.

La Chapelle also produced the best two photograph sequence involving Eminem holding a firecracker, both before and after.

Classical references worked well, such as when Mark Seliger captured Fiona Apple as Medea.

Put-ons abound. One of my favorites is Ricky Martin in a pool surrounded by nude lovelies facing down, appearing to have swooned for him. Mark Seliger also comes up with two winners in his two humorous images of the Backstreet Boys.

After you finish enjoying these photographs, I suggest that you dig out a camera, grab another person and take turns coming up with your own "youthful" poses.

Be young at heart, whatever your age!

From the very moment you open the cover, the photos in this book are very obviously "glossy magazine" photos. The colour is incredibly rich. The has obviously been a lot of work put into setting up each photo, and they would work well in magazine format. It was a little strange to see them set out in a book like this, but does it makes for a really interesting book. Whilst it isnt an "elite fashion photography" book, I dont think it is trying to be. It is simply a nice collection of photos of some of the popular people (eg. singer, actors) form our era. Mark Seliger and Isabel Snyder are superb fashion photographers, and it really shows in this book. Their photos really stand out from all others in the book, and are all incredibly good photos taken in an interesting manner. Its a good book to sit back on a couch with during the day, with some good tunes in the background.

4.0 out of 5 stars At Least I Saw It, August 9, 2004

Don't you just love it when people who haven't seen the book (and can't spell) post reviews, like the two below? No? I don't either.

For those of you who don't judge a book by it's cover, you just might like this one. It has some of the best pictures from Rolling Stone in it. Judge for yourself.

If you're youthful, up on all the current young stars, and enjoy the kind of photography that Rolling Stone made popular, buy this book now! It's big, colorful, and balmy enough to make you long for a cool shower.

If you're a connoisseur of the finest in photographic images, you may be somewhat underimpressed. Although "HotHouse" is nearer to boiling than freezing, I wouldn't rate the seductivity level as highly as David Wild--who writes the introduction--would make it out to be (see instead the work of Herb Ritts and Sante d'Orazio, among others). Still, overall, it's definitely worth a few looks.

The roughly 100 quality photos get high marks for being uninhibited, expressive, and big (each taking up AT LEAST a full page, thank you). On the downside, I take exception to the overuse of the airbrush and the underuse of b/w photography (but that's just me and my preferences). Thirty-one photographers are represented; however, nearly two-thirds of the shots were taken by only four: Mark Seliger, Isabel Snyder, David LaChapelle and Martin Schoeller. The credits list nothing more than subject and artist, but that's not a major drawback for this type of book. My favorite photos are the b/w of Jennifer Love Hewitt (that face!) and the color shot of Charlize Theron reclining with a wooden mannequin (great imagination!). Other notables are of Katie Holmes, Ananda Lewis, Mariah Carey, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe and Mena Suvari.

All in all, this is a very worthwhile book for fans of young entertainers or photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must for any photography lover!, April 19, 2010
This review is from: Hot House (Hardcover)
This is a great photo book for all those who are interested. I knew that I wanted to do photography after looking at this book with all the photos of celebrities such as Britney Spears, Tobey Maguire, and Heath Ledger just to name a few. So pick this up as a must to anyone's collection of photography or coffee table books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, January 12, 2006
This review is from: Hot House (Hardcover)
Now that the Christian Coalition have been heard from (Roogs and Hakop), for those of you who EXPECT to see flashy, glossy Holywood Icons reflected in a book of Rolling Stone photographs, well...here it is, in all its gloss and glory. If you are looking for the TIME Magazine photos of death and devestation (which, evidently, Roogs and Hakop were...) then moove along little doggies.. *NOTE* I believe that is the first and ONLY time I have ever heard Angelia Jolie referred to as "ghoulish." Think about that when trying to decide if the reviewer has ANY taste in art/fashion/photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book of Photographs...., February 24, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hot House (Hardcover)
I have to say that this book of photographs is one of the sexiest books to have come out since Hustler magazine! All the young stars are set up in highly seductive poses. No one could be disappointed by this collection of hot pictures.

There is something here for everyone. You get an equal amount of male and female celebrities in the pages of HotHouse. Some of my favorite stars photographed were Britney Spears, Katie Holmes, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. I just wish that the editors had chosen to add some pictures of Madonna to the pages--then it would have had practically every celebrity that I love.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book!!!!!, May 28, 2004

"bobweisz" (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hot House (Hardcover)
HOTHOUSE - a balmy book full of heat-seeking images that capture the essence of the assorted hotties we can't get out of our minds - is dedicated to the fetching principle that youth isn't NECESSARILY wasted on the young. Even to a feverish thirty-something writer, all the sweet birds and babes of youth on display within these pages at their most glowing, glamorous, intimate and flamboyant have become captivating, sometimes pulse-increasing, subjects of desire.
All of our lovely HOTHOUSE flowers - preserved for posterity by some of the world's greatest photographers - are seen in full bloom and stand deliciously at the corner where Youth and Pleasure meet and often hang out. These fin de siecle stars - pop icons in various levels of training and undress - appear to move on flying feet. Often they have been graced with other remarkable body parts as well. Turn the page and you'll likely find yourself feeling hot and not at all bothered.

- Bob Weisz, AKA David Wild, or whatever.

I love this book. The pictures are awesome. The only disappointment is that there weren't more pictures. Excellent ideas and very creative. I especially love the Mena Survani and Anna Kournikova.
