Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Hot Max 175WFGK MIG Welding Kit comes with everything you need to start welding today including 175 Amp MIG welder, welding cart, Kevlar stitched grey leather welding gloves, and fixed front wide vision welding helmet with a #10 shade. The Hot Max MIG welder is ready to weld with or without shielding gas right out of the box. Welds up to 3/8” mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. This portable MIG welder operates on 240 Volt single phase power so you can use it almost anywhere. Other machines require costly MIG conversion kits, but our machine is fully MIG ready and includes an Argon/CO2 regulator and hose. One special feature is that our machines have infinitely adjustable wire feed AND Voltage Control which both can be adjusted while you weld! No cumbersome selector switches that limit your voltage settings to a few choices. The Hot Max MIG welders are also factory pre-wired for the optional Hot Max SPG spool gun – no conversion kits where you need to rewire the machine to get the spool gun to work. The Hot Max MIG welder easily switches polarity so switching between gas welding and flux core welding is a snap. The ground clamp and MIG gun are easily removed which makes our machine easy to move from one location to another. Wire is electrically “cold” when you are not welding and machine has thermal overload protection. Includes Hot Max 175WFG MIG welder, ground clamp with 9’ cable, MIG gun with 10’ hose, Argon/CO2 regulator and 5’ gas hose, 2# spool of .030” flux core wire, .025” & .030” & .035” contact tips, gas nozzle for gun, 10# spool adapter, and driver roller that fits .025” to .035” wire (drive wheel for larger wire also available separately), Hot Max WC100 welding cart, wide vision fixed front welding helmet with a #10 shade, and Kevlar stitched grey leather welding gloves. Shielding gas is not included. Power cable is included but power plug is not included.

Ordered the unit on ebay. Just needed a little Mig for the garage. I am a welder by trade. So far this little welder has proven itself. I have welded 3/8 with .030 ER70S and it has no problem penetrating. Tried it with some .035 stainless wire and it ran just fine. I compared thos to a Millermatic 210 that we have at work and it runs right with it. Although I believe the duty cycle on the Miller is higher. I have yet to hit the duty cycle on the hotmax. All in all I would recommend this welder for any new welder or pro.

As to the welder: I was a bit skeptical because of the low price but it really works well and I've had it long enough now to be comfortable with it's durability.

The cart is simply the best buy for the money I've come across in a long while --it has only one minor flaw: if you use it with a larger (taller) bottle of Argon (I also have the spool gun and do aluminum welding with it), you will need to use a chunk of 2x4 or something to move the welder forward on the cart, else it will interfere with the gas hook up on the back of the welder.

It's a great combo for me, I use it quite a lot.

Shopped around for several months until I saw this welder on Amazon, after reading several reviews I was sold.
Prime shipping made it very affordable, better yet after I purchased the welder I went back to Amazon and noticed that the price jumped another hundred bucks.
I haven't had a chance to use the welder yet because I've got to pick up an Argon/CO2 bottle and some solid wire, hopefully soon I'll get to use it. Have a van that we have to replace panels on and this will come in very handy.
If your looking at this to do body panes then you'll want to invest in a bottle and solid wire, don't use flux core for thin sheet metal.
The cart seemed a bit flimsy until I got things tightened up, added a small plasma cutter to the bottom of the cart and now it's full.
Comes with plenty of extra tips, controls seem pretty straight forward, the welding handle/cord seems plenty long, the face mask is sort of cheesy but useful for a helper.
Overall this is a very very nice kit.
I would highly recommend this to a first timer up to a veteran welder who just needs something a bit more portable.
Come to think of it I do have a 15KW generator that's portable, this would be great to really make it a go anywhere welder for those out of the way repairs.

Final update on welder 28 May 2013
Finally got to use the welder over the weekend and found that the speed control failed to function. Investigated the problem and found the common lead from the speed control pot was not inserted fully in the mother board plug. After insertion the speed control functioned fine.
Started with the gas at 15 per the manufacturers recommendation and throttled it back to 10.
After fine tuning the current and wire speed welds were great.

I ordered a used - Like new version of this welder for $330 which was a great price. It arrived well packed and nothing was missing. After I put together the welding cart I took a good look at the welder. 2 of the screws that connect the yellow frame to the chassis were loose. It looked like all the screws had been loosened and tightened a few times.
I plugged it in and it powered on fine. The fan was blowing and I could hear the click when I pulled the trigger but the drive wheel was not pulling the wire through. It wasn't moving at all. After fooling around with it for a few minutes I decided to unscrew the cover and have a look. I found that a negative lead running from the main capacitor was disconnected from the main board. It was cut too short so I couldn't just plug it back in. I had to add a section of wire to jump the gap. Weird problem but it worked and I haven't had any more problems with it.

The machining on the cart left a little to be desired. I had to grind down the top shelf to fit it against the back properly. screw holes don't always line up. Best to put it together completely loose then tighten everything once all the screws are in place.
