The boys all agreed that it was mighty fine country music, a bit different, but mighty fine just the same. In memory of the stranger who had perished, the boys set about learning these new songs, injecting elements of their own traditional mountain style. And thus, from these unlikely -beginnings, an entirely new musical and cultural synthesis was set in motion. Rockgrass was born. As if the Creator Himself had uttered, "Let there be Rockgrass!" Now its six releases later, and Hayseed Dixie continue their tradition by covering songs such as "Whole Lotta Love" and "Dueling Banjos" on their latest release, " Hot Piece of Grass". Along with these classics, "Hot Piece of Grass" also contains some Hayseed Dixie originals, including fan favorite "Kirby Hill".

these guys are just outstanding! they come from true bluegrass lineage, with the Reno brothers following there legendary father. These guys are showing the old dog bluegrass traditionalist a few new tricks, real rock and roll done in that Appalachian styling. Barely Scotch (yes that's right and he's the lead singer) has said it best; "cuz a good song is a good song and getting drunk and playing music is getting drunk and playing music"This album will blow you away; and if you get a chance to see them live? Grab your mason jar of the white lighten, your banjer and be ready to dance. 5 stars

Hayseed Dixie have made a living covering various rock bands in a classic Appalacian bluegrass fashion. The first half of their new album continues that tradition with hillbilly renditions of Black Dog, War Pigs, Holiday (Green Day), Ace of Spades, Whole Lotta Love, Whole Lotta Rosie, and Runnin' With the Devil. The second half features originals (and the inescapable Dueling Banjos). Hayseed Dixie does a great job in what they set out to do: they manage to integrate fast banjo picking, fiddlin' and lonesome vocals into the covers, while still retaining loyalty toward them. But like Dread Zeppelin, Moog Cookbook, Gimme Gimmes, and all the others, it's ultimately a novelty imbued with irony, and after your curiosity is sated and you've played it for a couple of friends, it's not exactly something you'd listen to again. The album actually picks up midway with Hayseed's original compositions, where they become an actual bluegrass (or newgrass) band, and you can appreciate the musicianship and songwriting without having to hear it shoehorned into the ironic, kitchy covers.
