5.0 out of 5 stars Great children's book
This book is definitely a keeper. My little boy has asked for it to be read to him over and over. He really enjoyed it. It reminds him of his own horse! I would recommend it for little boys or girls! Super cute!

3.0 out of 5 stars Teaches Problem-Solving
With a story revolving around horses, my girls were immediately drawn to this book and the beautiful water color illustrations held their attention. As a former educator, I appreciated its simple lesson on problem solving and trial-and-error. This book would make a wonderful addition to any guidance unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chester reminds me of my daugthers, August 2, 2009
This review is from: Hot on the Range (Paperback)
Hot on the Range is one of the most adorable childrens' books that I have read lately. My twins absolutely adore horses and have asked me to read this book over and over again. I chuckle every time I read of Chester's antics. He reminds me a lot of my girls. Always having to do things "their" way and then eventually realizing my way was better.

Chester has a few run-in with animals and objects that leave him a less then happy horse. Eventually his master shows kindness and love. This little horse finally receives the attention and peace that he was seeking.

While Hot on the Range is a kid's book it definitely spoke to the kid in my heart. Beautiful illustrations from David C. Bryant highlight the story and the adventure of Chester, the paint horse. Hot on the Range

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Kid's Book!, July 24, 2009
This review is from: Hot on the Range (Paperback)
Hot on the Range follows the adventures of Chester, a young horse, trying to cool down on a hot Texas day. Throughout the story, Chester's personality really shines through.

After reading the book, my son instantly said how much he liked Chester. Chester is so likable, not only because of his ingenuity in the story, but his overall demeanor. He goes through so many trials and tribulations, but he keeps on trying.

Hot on the Range is a great book for children, especially animal-loving ones like mine. It has an easy to follow story line as well as beautiful illustrations that captivated my son while we were reading. It's a wonderful addition to our bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Children's Book Review: HOT on the Range by R.D. Jentsch, July 16, 2009
This review is from: Hot on the Range (Paperback)
Hot on the Range, written by R.D Jentsch and illustrated by David C. Bryant is a well written and beautifully illustrated children's book. We meet Chester, a beautiful paint horse and follow him on his journey to get cool relief from the hot Texas sun. Along the way we meet his pasture mates and barnyard friends, each of whom has their own distinct personality. Chester tries all different ways to get cool from asking his friends for advice, rolling in the dirt, lying in the grass, and being last in line at the water trough.Chester also has a mishap that is funny with a flowering cactus. Nothing works for him until Chester meets the old cow at the birdbath in the master's yard. We soon find out that a loving master solves his dilemma with a hose that soothes him with a cold spray of water. I enjoyed reading this book. I found the different personalities of the horses and the barnyard animals to be fun and interesting. I liked the way Chester approaches his friends and asks for their help and how they all give him their best advice. The highlight of this story for me is the love that the master has for Chester. She is kind and caring and she is a beautiful role model that shows children how important it is to love and care for our animals because they depend on us.

Children who are pre- and beginning readers will enjoy this fun book. The beautiful illustrations full of personality will bring the story to life. You can watch a video of the illustrations at Hot on the Range. This is a nice way to further the child's enjoyment of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot On the Range, July 10, 2009
This review is from: Hot on the Range (Paperback)
Hot on the Range, written by R.D Jentsch and illustrated by David C. Bryant is a delightful tale about a very hot paint horse named Chester. He tries everything he can think of to cool off but can't escape the hot Texas sun. It's too hot to roll in the dirt, smelling a flower results leads to a thorn in his nose, and when he tries to get a drink from the watering trough there's a long line of other hot barnyard animals already there. Finally Chester decides to follow the cow to the master's birdbath to try and find a cool refreshing drink. Only the cow is so thirsty that she drinks it all!

Just when he thinks he might be in trouble, for being in the master's yard right by the empty bird bath, he finds out his master is really a very gentle and caring one. She helps Chester finally find relief from the hot, hot, hot summer by spraying him with water from the hose. Chester thinks it's just like rain and is finally cooled off. His master even helps him further by removing the thorn from his nose; then all better Chester meets up with his best friend a palamino horse named Willie. The story ends with them both relaxing in the shade.

Author R.D. Jentsch is an fifteen year veteran of the horse industry and has fourteen horses. She's a native Texan who resides on a ranch outside of Wimberley, Texas. Her many years of experience as an avid horsewoman help her convey Chester the horse's unique personality, no doubt based on some of her horse friends! Jentsch's tale was written to help teach children about the kinder, gentler side of horsemanship.

We found that Jentsch's real life experience with horse enhanced the story and introduced my daughter to many new concepts that, we as her life long suburban dwelling parents, have no experience wtih. It's not just a narrative that happens to have a horse as the main character, through the story you also learn about horse characteristics and how they move around.

My nearly three year old found Hot on the Range to be a highly engaging book as horses and farm animals are of high interest to her. The storyline and simple but realistic watercolor illustrations kept her attention. Preview more of the story's illustrations by viewing the slide show set to guitar music on the book's site. Not only was this book a real page turner for for my daughter, it's quickly becoming a favorite read. In fact, I had a hard time getting the book away from her when it came time for me to write this review. I finally found our copy, in her bed along side her stuffed horse.

I liked how through her descriptive word choices Jentsch really convayed Chester's lively personality. The vocabulary is sophisticated and introduced new words that my daughters was previously unfamiliar with such as: palomino, prance, bleat, trough, lounging, and sauntered. What is also neat about this book is how the text treatment enhances the overall story. For instance when the two horses roll in the dirt, the text rolls along with them, and important lines of the story or enlarged to really stand out and lend further emphasis to them.

Hot on the Range is a wonderful book that would enhance many learning units, such as a farm theme. I think it's an excellent read aloud for children aged 3-6 and that for most second graders would still be a challenging read. Since a series of events happen, it would be a good candidate for a story retelling or story sequencing activity. Due to the advanced vocabulary, it's also a good book to use in conjunction with word walls with early elementary grades. Young writers could write about a hot, hot, hot day and what they would do to cool off . Another fun writing extention would be to read most of the story, stop at the point where the master finds Chester in her yard, and have your students write their ending to the story. After everyone is finished it would fun to then read the Jentsch's ending and compare it to their own.

We really enjoyed our review copy and look forward to seeing more quality children's literature from R.D. Jentsch, an exciting new author! Look for her new title Froggy and Friends Go to the Creek set to be released at the end of August!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, July 9, 2009
This review is from: Hot on the Range (Paperback)
Hot On The Range is an adorably cute story of two horses who try and beat the heat in the Texas sun. The writing is vivid and yet simple to understand. It's the perfect combination to keep a young reader's attention, and even allow them a chance to read the book themselves. The story line is entertaining and easily followed. I especially love the underlying lesson that persistence will pay off. (Chester gets a nice cool bath from his owner after trying several other things to cool down.) It's a great way to teach a child to keep trying until they get it.

The illustration in the book is great too. It has a whimsical feel that fits with the story. David C. Bryant is very talented. The pictures have an amazing watercolor type quality to them that makes them a joy to look at. The colors are bright enough to please even my 1o month old son, who loved looking at the book. I also really enjoy how the text itself was used to illustrate parts of the story. The font was bigger at some points, and even had some decorative qualities at others.

All in all this is a great children's book I would highly recommend to anyone who has a child that loves to read.
