I never thought that I would need to write a negative review - that is, until now. If you are looking to add to your repertoire of techniques - don't make the same mistake I did in buying this book.

The techniques offered in this book have very little (if any) good information to offer - there are plenty of instances of this throughout the book.

As one example, the section on "Vibrato", provides no tips, no exercises, in fact - no description of what good vibrato is or how it is done.

Another example, the section on "Growl", has content so thin that it leaves the reader "out in the cold". The author offers only one (of several) techniques for growling, but that description is inadequate at best for the production of growl.

I could go on (check out the section on "glissando"), but let me just say that the author and publisher are doing a disservice to sax students with this book.

We should expect that any decent music "how-to" book should include good descriptions (with illustrations), tips (and/or warnings), and exercises - perhaps even recorded examples. Sorry - this book doesn't measure up.

The book has some good information in it, but I think it should be updated, and have a C. D. with examples of the sounds and exercises...thus the purchaser will benefit more fully from it's contient...

5.0 out of 5 stars Those who do, do ! Rock sax is a hit, April 23, 2005
This review is from: Hot Rock Sax - Techniques, Licks And Effects (Paperback)
Those who can do, do.This is something very important to the saxophone. I live in Amsterdam and agree in the other reviews, I heard Tim Price here playing a lot and he can do. He is big respected here in Amsterdam because of Hans and Candy Dulfer really dig him, and his music.
I like how he explain the music, if you can play a little or a lot the text is very easy to get to.
The basics section help me a lot because I had not a lot of thatin my training. Likewise the blues section or the interval section chapter.
I hope this book helps people round the world, it is good for music.Fantastic book from a fantastic saxman.
Sorry about my English, I am good talkerbut not so good typer. Better though on sax with this book.
