5.0 out of 5 stars Those who do, do ! Rock sax is a hit
Those who can do, do.This is something very important to the saxophone. I live in Amsterdam and agree in the other reviews, I heard Tim Price here playing a lot and he can do. He is big respected here in Amsterdam because of Hans and Candy Dulfer really dig him, and his music.
I like how he explain the music, if you can play a little or a lot the text is very easy...

I never thought that I would need to write a negative review - that is, until now. If you are looking to add to your repertoire of techniques - don't make the same mistake I did in buying this book.

I never thought that I would need to write a negative review - that is, until now. If you are looking to add to your repertoire of techniques - don't make the same mistake I did in buying this book.

The techniques offered in this book have very little (if any) good information to offer - there are plenty of instances of this throughout the book.

As one example, the section on "Vibrato", provides no tips, no exercises, in fact - no description of what good vibrato is or how it is done.

Another example, the section on "Growl", has content so thin that it leaves the reader "out in the cold". The author offers only one (of several) techniques for growling, but that description is inadequate at best for the production of growl.

I could go on (check out the section on "glissando"), but let me just say that the author and publisher are doing a disservice to sax students with this book.

We should expect that any decent music "how-to" book should include good descriptions (with illustrations), tips (and/or warnings), and exercises - perhaps even recorded examples. Sorry - this book doesn't measure up.

The book has some good information in it, but I think it should be updated, and have a C. D. with examples of the sounds and exercises...thus the purchaser will benefit more fully from it's contient...

The basics section help me a lot because I had not a lot of thatin my training. Likewise the blues section or the interval section chapter.
I hope this book helps people round the world, it is good for music.Fantastic book from a fantastic saxman.
Sorry about my English, I am good talkerbut not so good typer. Better though on sax with this book.

The best rock sax text out there.Nothing touches this.
I heard Tim in New Orleans tearing up the sax in the French Quarter. This guy is a flame thrower player. He belongs with any big name rock band. Fierce tells it all.
I had to ask him, how can I get this rock chops going? He told me about the book, as well as wrote out things for me to play while he was on break.
This dude is class and plays and writes the best.
Get this book and start understanding the underworld of rock sax.

I was suggested to get this book by Greg Piccolo. I saw Greg in Rhode Island and asked him about flutter tounging and growling sax effects. He told me about this book by his friend Tim Price and how great it was and how it helped his playing. He was so sincere about it that i went out the next day and picked it up. This book is a gold mine of Rock and R&B sax ideas. Without question it is worth every penny and a big help. I think if i didnt have this book, my playing would really suffer. It is so focused and easy to understand. Every sax player interested in Rock and Blues should have it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doc, January 22, 2003

I've been using this book, with many others, for about a year. As a beginner, I have found it to be very helpful. For example, the section on reeds was the first intelligible piece on the subject that I found. You won't find everything here, and the book is not for advanced students. If you are a beginner like me, however, I think you will find it as useful as, say, Larry Teal or John Laughter. The book is more useful if you use it alongside Tim's etudes and articles found on www.....com.

What can you say when Plas Johnson tells you to buy this book?

You buy the book. And you see why Plas told you to buy it.
The inside information here is without a doubt a life saver for the rock sax player.
I never understood FLUTTER TOUNGE tech. I had other rock sax books but they fell real short, vage with to many pictures. This book gets right in your face and tells it like it is.
Tim Price really has created a bible of rock sax stuff here.
Some call it a text. I call it a life saver. My playing improved immediatly after getting this book.
Don't leave home without this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most helpful Sax book I ever had, April 22, 2005
This review is from: Hot Rock Sax - Techniques, Licks And Effects (Paperback)
I bought this book after I saw the author playing in New Orleans at a club. The text is perfect, everything is highly explained and easy to put to use.
The history is so helpful and to the point. I never heard of some of these people until I got this. That was a experience as well.
I tried other books on this subject but they fell short. This book not only is clear and cool but written by one of the masters of the sax. I heard him in New Orleans with Dr John, then later doing some jazz at his Coltrane Tribute. What a player and nice guy. I think Price deserves the press and image that guys like Branford or Sanborn have. He's more unique than they are, and can walk the walk and talk the talk. This book proves that 1000%.
Buy the book and you will see results.
100000000 stars for this one!
