Beth Bowman, a private investigator, has her hands full with her latest case. Her new client wants Beth to gather evidence to prove that the client's husband is cheating. Beth follows him to his hotel room, hears an argument, and rushes in to help. She is knocked out, and when she awakens, she is on the floor next to one very dead husband. Realizing she has been set up, Beth knows she has to find some answers before she is arrested for murder.

I really enjoyed this story. Beth is a great character. She is tough, capable, and intelligent, is able to defend herself, and definitely thinks outside the box. She is not your `usual' protagonist, as she doesn't need anyone running to her rescue. She is very good at saving herself. I just loved the character of Dr. Rassmussen. The author has given him a wonderful sense of humor. I enjoyed the conversations between the doctor and Beth--funny and sarcastic, yet realistic.

Hot Rocks is a great read. This book has a strong storyline, is suspenseful and edgy, and contains lots of twists and turns. I hope there is another Beth Bowman book in the works.

Randy Rawls' mystery, Hot Rocks, features Elizabeth (Beth) Bowman as a tough, sassy, intelligent, occasionally feminine PI who's building a career in South Florida.

Beth contracts to investigate yet another wandering husband, but this time the case becomes a bad headache. She follows the man to a hotel room, enters the room because she hears someone being threatened, and ends up knocked unconscious. The man, who is really not anybody's husband, is dead, the gun used in the murder belongs to Beth, and the police cast a suspicious eye in her direction. The only good that comes of the whole mess is that she meets the hunky Dr. Rasmussen when he tends to her wounds.

While fighting to save her reputation and career, Beth tangles with thugs, is befriended by street people, falls for the good doctor, and follows a trail leading to hot rocks and life-threatening danger.

Hot Rocks is an entertaining, fast-paced read filled with surprises, drama, a bit of romance (sorry Randy), and a good measure of humor.

I loved this book and will definately be getting more from this author. It reminded me a little of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. I loved the characters and the story line and highly recommend this one!
