We first checked this book out from the library, and my boys (ages 2 and 3) couldn't get enough. After renewing the book from the library several times it was clear we should just buy it. I can see them enjoying this book for years.

The words are catchy and engaging ("Great day, grin day, build a car to win day") and the story is uniquely entertaining (A hot rod for a hamster? Who would think it would be so fun?). My boys like to say the words along with me and the race at the end is always greatly anticipated. They also like the "What would you choose?" parts where they can pick what they would want for a hot rod. I don't buy kids books unless I love them (or my kids do and I can tell it's a good book), and this one's a keeper.

This picture book is a lot of fun to share with children. The text begins, "Great day, grin day, build a car to wind day, /Cheer day, Chase day, gonna have a race day!" Word balloons jazz the story up, Hot Rod Hamster says, "I need a hot rod!" Bull Dog says, "A hot rod for a hamster? You'll need something very small." "And FAST!" replies the hamster. This amusing picture book is about a rambunctious hamster that needs a "hot rod" so he can participate in a car race. A Bull Dog owns the local wrecking yard, and puts together a perfect little car for the hamster, "Old car, new car, shiny painted blue car, Rust car, clean car, itty-bitty green car. Which would you choose?" Word balloons add comments by other dogs: one snotty racer, a Dalmatian dog asks Hamster, "Is your car a toy?" Another racer says, "You're awfully small." A scowling, determined Hamster responds, "G R R R. I'm built for speed!" Wonderful acrylic illustrations provide humor, and the cartoon characters are large-sized, perfect for viewing in a story time. One hilarious illustration shows the Bull Dog when he upends himself in a box of old toys, and finds a helmet for Hot Rod Hamster to wear.

This is a cute story that my 6 year old grandson loves. He loves anything about racing. It's a great short story, perfect for one quick one before bed and he enjoyed the rhyming format and questioning about "which would you choose"?

This was a perfect book for my roadster loving, hampster adoring nephew that's learning to read (he's 5.) It certainly keeps his attention.

Hod Rod Hamster is my son's favorite book. It is a quick read with rhythmic, engaging verses and vibrant illustrations. He can't wait to answer the book's question on several of the pages "Which one would YOU choose"? Great entertainment for both of us.

My 3 yr old absolutely loves this book! To tell you the truth I get a kick out of reading this book every time I read to him.

I first saw Happy Birthday Hamster in a book store. My son's second birthday was approaching and I thought the book would be better than a card. I laughed out loud when I read it.

Before spending the money for it (my goodness kids books cost a fortune) I tried to check it out from the library, but we could only find this one. The younger kids LOVED it and it even got reads from our 8 year old. It was a couple of days before our (then one year) young son was chasing us through the house with it, we were all taking turns reading it to him, any one person maybe having to read it 5 times in a day. There were definitely points where hiding it from him was not beneath me : )

It's a very fun book. I read it in different voices and my two year old son now 'reads' it on his own, turning each page and proclaiming the main features, ("Hot rod!" 'Hot rod? Hamster? Very small!' "and FAST!" or "New car! Blue car! Green car! You choose?") He loves to explore all of the pages and talk about the different things in the pictures.

I also purchased Happy Birthday Hamster with it, and these books have really helped his interest in books. Previously he did not often have the patience for being read to, but the question of 'Which would you choose?' gets him very excited. If he stopped wanting to read them tomorrow, honestly I think we've gotten our money's worth.

My 6 yr old daughter and 2 yr old son enjoyed this book. I would definetely recommend for sure if you have a son.

My 3 1/2 year old daughter likes this story. It's very short and colorful, which makes it an easy read for young kids.

Cynthia Lord's HOT ROD HAMSTER is an especially notable, recommended title spiced with gorgeous eye-catching drawings by Derek Anderson as it tells of a hamster's race to the finish line. "Which would you choose" offers kids interactive choices in the course of a zany story that's a top pick for any picturebook library.
