Book Description

"Hot Rods As They Were" is the second book in the hot rod history series of books by Don Montgomery. The 160 book pages contain 301 photos from over 50 years ago. The book shows the various types of hot rods being built over 50 years ago. There are chapters about Engines,Roadsters,Coupes and Sedans,Modifieds,Streamliners,Track Roadsters and the early Drag Racers. The text and photos discuss and show hot rodding in the period from about 1935 to 1955. The purpose of this book is to show the evolution of the various types of hot rods. The book shows how the hot rod roadster styles evolved. It also shows and discusses how coupes and sedans became a part of hot rodding and which models were popular. Modifieds,Streamliners and the early drag racers are described as are the most professional hot rods of their day, the Track Roadsters. Initially the hot rods were dual purpose vehicles. They furnished daily transportation for the owner as his only car and were readily available for racing on the streets or at the dry lakes time trials. By the late 1940s that changed as most hot rodding competition became so specialized that a dual purpose hot rod had difficulty being competitive. By 1955 most of the real hot rods were not on the streets. This book is filled with photos from rodder's albums. The ideas, styling, features and details of the hot rods shown in the book will be interesting to everyone interested in the history of hot rodding. The book shows what it was like during the real early days of hot rodding.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Don Montgomery was one of the many young men who jumped into hot rodding in the 1940s. He participated in street activities, not all legal, and raced at the Russetta Timing Assoc. dry lakes time trials. After 6 seasons of racing on the dry lakes, including final class records in the 1952 and 1953 seasons, Don concentrated on the new thing; drag racing. He ran a successful Fuel Coupe and later a Supercharged Gas Coupe up until 1972 and also arranged drag racing programs. The author is a USC graduate engineer and former owner of an electronics manufacturing firm. Drag racing was his hobby. As a Southern Californian involved in hot rodding it has been a privledge to know so many of the guys who were a part of hot rodding. Now it has been fun to write about them and give credit to all the guys and their accomplishments. These hot rod history books are meant to show and tell what hot rodding was really like in the earlier days. The author was there. All seven books in the series are meant to bring back memories, to educate those who were not there and to give credit to those who deserve it.

More About the Author

Don Montgomery was one of the many young men in Southern California who jumped into hot rodding in the 1940s. He participated in street activies, not especially legal, and raced at the dry lakes time trials with the Russetta Timing Assn. Organized drag racing took off in 1950 and Don competed in it. After 6 seasons of dry lakes racing, with his class record in the last 2 seasons, Don moved on to concentrate with drag racing. He raced a fuel coupe in the 1950s and a supercharged gas coupe in the 1960s in addition to arranging drag racing programs. He has been a street rodder since then.
Hot rodding was, and is, Don's hobby. He graduated from the University Of Southern California with an engineering degree. Most of his career was spent in electonics manufacturing of frequency control devices. After selling the business he did some articles about hot rod history in an effort to "tell it like it was". This led to publishing his first book - Hot Rods In The Forties. The book relied on photos from veteran hot rodders photo albums or shoeboxes. After the first book came out more photos were found and more books were published. He has authored eight hot rod history books. The books cover the 1930s to 1950s era or the 1960s drag racing era. The purpose for writing these books is to make available an accurate look at the early days of hot rodding. The author was fortunate to have participated in a great period of hot rodding and to have known many of the pioneers of hot rodding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Rods As They Were, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Hot Rods As They Were: Another Blast from the Past (Hardcover)
This book, one of several by Don Montgomery, is a must read for vintage hot rod enthusiasts. It not only shows the famous and legendary cars of the era, but also shows the everyday, journeyman hot rods of the day. Actual black and white photos show the uniquely American hot rod at the Southern California dry lakes, the birthplace of hotrodding.
