Biography

Quasi formed in Portland, Ore., in 1993, which means that it's been fearlessly rocking since long before your website launched or you booted up an iPod. For years -- 17 to be exact -- it was a duo consisting of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. In 2006, Joanna Bolme (of Stephen Malkmus + The Jicks) joined the band on bass.

Quasi flings words and notes relentlessly, hurling music across the stage like… Read more in Amazon's Quasi Store

4.0 out of 5 stars close, but no cigar., October 15, 2003

The average customer rating for this CD is only two stars? Wow. Jeez. That's...really low. I'm a great big rabid Quasi fan, and although this album isn't as good as their previous ones, it isn't all that bad. I downloaded the whole thing when it was leaked onto the internet earlier this summer, and at first hated it. Then, slowly, it grew on me. Keep listening to it, maybe it will do the same for you. While most of Quasi's albums have more good songs than not-so-good ones, this album is about 50/50.

The main thing that really bugged me at first with this album was the whole political thing (as, apparently, it did other people, too). I thought I read somewhere that the Blues Goblins project was supposed to be Sam's 'political outlet,' but I guess I was wrong. Some of the other songs on this album, though, are great, like "Master & Dog," "Lullaby #2," and some others.

So if you like Quasi, buy this album without a second thought, for better or for worse. If you're just getting into the band, get "Featuring Birds" first and then go from there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quasi kicks ass once again, October 25, 2003

This album isn't the shining gem that Quasi has produced before, but it is still a fabulous album.

The album is filled with songs of great depth and excellent arrangement such as "Drunken Tears", "No one", and "Lullaby pt. 2." Yeah, the cover art kind of sucks, but oh well.

I'm saddened that people will give such a musically enjoyable album a low rating merely because they disagree with the politcal message in one or two of the songs. Get a freaking grip.

4.0 out of 5 stars quasi blues, November 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hot Shit (Audio CD)
I think this is a very good album. I am a Quasi fan and was pleasantly surprised with the first listen of this album. The sound is definetely Quasi, with their sly, steady, rockin' groove but there is a lot of unexpected energy in some of these songs. Other songs build from a nice ambient, easy foundation before the lyrics are layered on top. And the whole album has a nice touch of the blues. Quasi isn't standing still with this album, they are building and refining. I recommmend it highly.
