The average customer rating for this CD is only two stars? Wow. Jeez. That's...really low. I'm a great big rabid Quasi fan, and although this album isn't as good as their previous ones, it isn't all that bad. I downloaded the whole thing when it was leaked onto the internet earlier this summer, and at first hated it. Then, slowly, it grew on me. Keep listening to it, maybe it will do the same for you. While most of Quasi's albums have more good songs than not-so-good ones, this album is about 50/50.The main thing that really bugged me at first with this album was the whole political thing (as, apparently, it did other people, too). I thought I read somewhere that the Blues Goblins project was supposed to be Sam's 'political outlet,' but I guess I was wrong. Some of the other songs on this album, though, are great, like "Master & Dog," "Lullaby #2," and some others. So if you like Quasi, buy this album without a second thought, for better or for worse. If you're just getting into the band, get "Featuring Birds" first and then go from there.

Quasi kicks ass once again,

This album isn't the shining gem that Quasi has produced before, but it is still a fabulous album. The album is filled with songs of great depth and excellent arrangement such as "Drunken Tears", "No one", and "Lullaby pt. 2." Yeah, the cover art kind of sucks, but oh well. I'm saddened that people will give such a musically enjoyable album a low rating merely because they disagree with the politcal message in one or two of the songs. Get a freaking grip.

I think this is a very good album. I am a Quasi fan and was pleasantly surprised with the first listen of this album. The sound is definetely Quasi, with their sly, steady, rockin' groove but there is a lot of unexpected energy in some of these songs. Other songs build from a nice ambient, easy foundation before the lyrics are layered on top. And the whole album has a nice touch of the blues. Quasi isn't standing still with this album, they are building and refining. I recommmend it highly.

I bought this CD at one of their live shows, and, as such, my love for this album could be somewhat influenced by the great time I experienced there. I met Sam, talked very, very little to Janet, saw them play live (they are simply amazing), etc, etc. Quasi is one of my favorite bands, and the experience was one of the best ones in a long time for me.However, even reviewing the album on it's own terms, it's actually quite amazing. Although there are only eleven tracks on here (compared to, oh, the sixteen tracks from "Featuring 'Birds'"), it's just as long as almost any other Quasi album. This album is addicting. It's all I've been listening to for a solid two days now, with my current favorites being "Hot Sh*t," "Good Time Rock & Roll," "Master & Dog," "Sunshine Sounds," and "No One." "Sunshine Sounds" is my absolute favorite. It's seven minutes long, and full of really great guitar work. Most of it's instrumental. It starts right away, and goes through a series of different melodies and patterns. It finishes, as odd as it sounds, like a good novel would -- everything is resolved. "White Devil's Dream," musically, is quite different. Really avant-garde. I like it. Lyrically? Well, at least they actually had the nerve to say what they thought. Not many songwriters these days do. However, in a couple years, it's going to be really outdated, which is a tad unfortunate. I even think the cover art and the album title are fine; the first time I saw the cover, I actually laughed. It's just goofy, that's all. Is it worth a purchase? Yeah, of course, especially if you're a Quasi fan. They're branching out into new territories, and, for the most part, I like what I hear.

This was my first exposure to Quasi and I loved it so much I purchased the rest of their catalog at one of their shows. To be perfectly honest, unlike most reviewers, I prefer this album to their earlier ones.

quasi is one of my favorite bands, and this album ranks along with their best. I think I probably enjoy it more than the others, given how dark some of the songs are and the wide range of weird instrumentation.

Why Sam....why.,

My disgust for the cover of this album is beyond belief. Why in the name of God was this made the cd cover? I'm sure they must've had other ideas they sorted through before they reached a final decision. It's baffling to think that they settled on this one. The exact same goes for the title of this album....why. The music here pretty much coincides with the cover and title of the album. I love Quasi, and thoroughly enjoyed albums such as 'Field Studies' and 'featuring: Birds', but this album just falls short. It's just not fun to listen to, and the lyrics aren't what they used to be. For the avid quasi fan this will be the biggest disappointment you will ever have.

Quasi reached their nadir..,

Well, well, well. Malcontent, Sam Coomes, is so much full of vitriol these days, he ruins this album with his tiresome leftist rantings.
I used to like Quasi quite a bit. Even when you take the politics out of the equation, the songs are still LAME. The two word album title is somewhat apt.

I got a freaking grip on this album, and it stinks. Sam bin Laden, oops, Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss can't write em like like they used to. Skip this one and get "Field Studies" instead. Save your money instead of blowing it on this tedious tripe.

I liked Quasi better when they kept their noses out of politics. This album, aloof left-wing politics aside, just leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss aren't intellectuals when it comes politics. Next time, if they'd leave their socialist leanings out of the music and add a few catchy hooks instead, they *might* renew my interest in them. Buy "Field Studies" or "featuring 'Birds'" instead. |
