Another good installment in the Hot Shot golf series,

This review is from: Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds (Video Game)
After playing all the Hot Shot Golf games on the Playstation 2 and being very pleased with all of them, I am again impressed with the new Out of Bounds version for the Playstation 3. Beginning with a look at graphics, I don't know if I would label them true 'next generation' in appearance but they are very nice to look at. Whether it is reflections off of water or vegetation or clothes on the players and caddies, it is well done in my opinion. As far as seamless game play, you're going to get that here. There is no lag or stutter in any animations and the load times are virtually non-existent in almost every case. Movement from hole to hole is quick and a round of golf can be too. I can play a round of 9 holes in about 12 to 15 minutes (I'm still on the 9 hole challenges at this point in the game).
When it comes to the controls used in playing the game, they are easy to learn and not hard to master, with one exception. This new version introduces a new type of advanced shot method where you watch the backswing of your player and look for flashing lights at certain points to gauge how hard to swing. Upon making your downswing, a circular meter below the golfer has a ring around it that collapses toward a ball icon and when the circle shrinks to encompass the ball, you hit the X button on the controller at just the right time to get a perfect hit. It sounds complicated but it isn't really. It is all a matter of timing and a little patience required. I personally still use the traditional shot method as seen in previous Hot Shot games which is the power bar at the bottom which gives you more precision in setting power and showing just where to hit a solid impact on the ball. I've found the advanced shot type a bit awkward personally and even though the manual says that the new method offers better range and impact zone, I haven't noticed any significant differences between the two shot methods and this is after playing many rounds with many different types of clubs using both shot types. So far I've only played on two courses in the challenge mode (you open up new courses after beating a computer opponent in each challenge session) and what I've seen so far is good stuff. There is options to play regular games (stroke, match play, etc.) aside from the challenges and you can do practice rounds also where you can set course conditions to help you make shots in certain types of situations. There are 5 main characters that you can choose to start out with and each one has their own individual strengths, animations, and funny ways of talking. There is also several different caddies that add a good dose of humor now and again during the rounds. I haven't played online yet and I don't know If I will do that but the instruction manual is very detailed on how to do this and the manual is excellent regarding all other facets of the game also. Something to look forward to, according to the game makers, is the fact that later on you can go online to download new content for the game including new courses, new gear, and other goodies. If you're a past fan of Hot Shots Golf, I would definitely recommend picking up Out of Bounds because it's a great game in my opinion and should bring many hours of fun to those that like golf.

I have been playing Hot Shots Golf since the first time it came out on Playstation and it never loses its fun. This new game, first version for the PS3, is just as fun as the orignal, plus with updated graphics. The controls are tight, the sounds are great, I have not been able to stop playing until my girlfriend wrestled the controller away from me.

There's not much that I can say that hasn't all ready been said by other reviewers. This game is beautiful, and a lot of fun. You're given two starting characters with a caddy to choose from. The environments are simply breath taking.
But that's not the selling point of this game. No, the online play is the best feature and while it may not have voice chat it is still highly enjoyable! You're able to customize your own little character that looks somewhat similar to a Mii from Nintendo's Wii. As you win tournaments against other players you receive new items to customize your character with. I highly recommend this for any fan of casual golf games, that likes to play with other people.

I am a long time fan of this series, and this game keeps the same solid gameplay and adds some very pretty graphics. Also, they have added a new shot system, which took a few minutes to get used to but I now prefer. Keep in mind that if your'e used to these games the old system is exactly the same and is always an option (except for a few tournaments that require the new). Also, the online mode is great. You can enter scheduled tournaments, which have a time limit per hole but you dont see any other players, or more normal 8 player games with friends or random people. This adds alot of depth to the game, but people online are really good, so be warned that you will not do well at first.
However, there are only 6 courses and 15 golfers. They just started selling new golfers on the playstation network, and I am sure extra purchased content is the name of the game in this title's future. Its fun, but I am only giving it 3 stars because of the lack of content and having to buy more future content to get the same number of courses as previous titles, even on the psp!

This is a great golf game. I've messed around with a few golf titles in the past, and found myself getting bored with them rather quickly. But Hot Shots golf seems to put 'fun' at the top of it's priorities.
At first, I thought I might be put off by the cartoonish style graphics, but the gameplay is just so good that I really don't care anymore. It's the coordination, timing, and calculating that gives this game such great replay value. If your tired of all the heavy handed FPS in the gaming world, then give yourself a break and go play Hot Shots golf. You'll have fun!!!

I bought this based on IGN review and also when it was a great price. This game is not worth 60 bucks more like 20 bucks.
Now on to the game, the characters are fun and easy to use. Characters such as Felipe and Suzuki got some comical lines especially if play with multiplayer with family or friends. Sometimes, the game can be frustrating at times in challenge mode, when you get OB, WH. But I just reset the game by pressing all at once, R2, R1, L2, L1, start and select and it will go to the main menu. If you love golf, pick this up only at a reasonable price, also check IGN for in depth review of this game and more.

As usual Hot Shots Golf for the PS3 is just as much fun as all the other stellar Hot Shots Golf games for other consoles.
You can't go wrong buying Hot Shots Golf. Even if you've never thought of yourself as a golfer, you love playing this addictive game.

Having played both Hot Shots 3 and Fore on the PS2...and wearing out the latter, I was eager to get my hands on an inexpensive Out of Bounds when I finally got around to owning a PS3. Took a while...do to the popularity of this game STILL, but when I finally got it, I was slightly let down by the similarity in graphics between the last one for the PS2(granted I started using component HD cables) and the PS3 version.
That is not the reason I take away a star however...I do that for the rediculously time consuming updates that are required to get online with this game. I received this game Monday evening in the mail, played single player for a while Monday night and then curiousity called and I went to the online menu. A combined 4 hours or so later I was finally done with three separate download marathons. No Lie...the first consisted of 960 some odd files that took close to 2 hours to finish...excited I restarted the game like it asked me too and went to the online menu again...660 some odd files later and another hour and a half or so I repeated that same process...only to find that there were 360 left to go. That was almost a deal breaker had I not had a nice dinner before hand(not to mention some shows on DVR to pass the time). So...to those that are reading this because of the intent to purchase for the first time...set aside some time before you get all giddy about linking up with a friend online with this game. I haven't actually played online yet(because it was time for sleep once the thing finished downloading) but the single player mode is just as fun as the previous two titles on the PS2..so I still recommend the purchase.

I have played many of the HSG series and they keep improving. There is always something to unlock or challenge you further. Fun features and updates from online are cheap to reasonable - $5 for a new course. The realism of ball impact, trajectory, lie, and spin are very accurate.
Friends and I have played hours and hours of 4 person tournaments with fun rules like big cup and +2 for sand traps. |
