HOT STUFF FROM THE WINDY CITY,
By
This review is from: Hot Stuff: Black Chicago Bands 1922-1929 (Audio CD)
In his informative liner note Mark Berresford points out that, unlike New York, the early development of black bands in Chicago went largely unrecorded. One exception is the first two tracks on this compilation, which date from late 1923/24 and owe their existence solely to a test pressing. It is unfortunate that the likely cornetist, Freddie Keppard, has had his surname misspelt in the discography, as also has Charles Elgar, leader of the next band, whose complete recorded output is presented here.
Fess Williams (the soubriquet was short for Professor, an honorific) recorded mostly with his Royal Flush Orchestra, but in April 1928, whilst directing the house band at the newly-opened Regal Theatre on South Parkway, he recorded two numbers with that aggregation under the label of his Joy Boys. Carroll Dickerson is best known for the presence of Louis Armstrong on two recordings made by his Savoyagers in July 1928, but the two recordings included here were made two months earlier, with Willie Hightower in the first trumpet chair. Walter Barnes had established himself by virtue of a residency at the Cotton Club in Cicero and subsequent tours in the south and mid-west when he began recording in late 1928, and his complete output is included here. The compilation concludes with two recordings by hot ciornettist Oliver Cobb, on which he also sings. This is an invaluable testament to the black Chicago big bands of the late twenties. But for drummer Zutty Singleton, who features on the two Carroll Dickerson sides, none of the players is a big name, but the music they produced is hard-driving and distinctive, and it deserves to be better known.

These are all hot black big bands circa 1922-1928, this is essential stuff that collectors will want to add to their jazz library. Hot dance bands at their hottest, all really rare stuff. Essential

This is the hottest stuff ever to be put out on one CD!!!,
This review is from: Hot Stuff: Black Chicago Bands 1922-1929 (Audio CD)
These hot black big bands from the 20's really swing with tight arrangements, and some good solos. This is the best dance/jazz music from the 20's. Highly recommeded. This stuff is also very rare dating from 1922-1928. You won't recognize any names however, it's gaurenteed to be the hottest 20's jazz you've ever heard, and even collectors won't have this rare hot jazz. Pick it up today.
