First Romance Novel I Ever Read,
By Hathor422 (South Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HOT TOUCH (Loveswept) (Mass Market Paperback)
Hot Touch was the first romance novel I ever read and I dare say it sparked a lifelong love of reading. My mother received a package of 4 books as part of a promo Loveswept had. To this day she's still not sure who signed her up for it, but needless to say, she didnt read them. She gave them to me and I poured through them at a remarkable rate.
Hot Touch, tells the story of Paul Belue, a Cajun that has a film crew come to his L.A. home to film a movie. Intro Caroline Fitzsimmons, an animal trainer with a uncanny knack for getting animals to do what she wants, who also has an intense dislike for the Southern town she's forced to work in. Paul slowly chips away at the wall Carolina has around her heart, and as he does, he discovers the reason behind her hatred of Louisiana. But sometimes digging up the past isn't always such a good thing. This story was also one of the first I read that combined paranormal qualities in a romance novel. This is a total classic romance novel, and I cant wait to own it again. I still have my original copy, but after almost 20 years, it's very beat up and falling apart. BUY this book if you love your romance novel with a small paranormal twist. Buy it even of you don't because it's just that good. Hot Touch

SO excited to see these old Loveswepts now available on Kindle. And I actually remember this one from back in the day.I enjoyed all the Dr. Doolittle aspects of the story. I thought the author did a good job of imbuing the text with the "sound" of the accent. I think the hero's take on sex and intimacy was an interesting change. However, when he turned ugly, it was really ugly, albeit brief. And all of the conflicts in this story were emotional and self-inflicted, and that just wears me out. I will be picking up the rest of Smith's nicely priced Loveswepts, with pleasure.

4 1/2 Stars,

This review is from: Hot Touch (Paperback)
The foundation of Deborah Smith's career is built on the beauty of earlier works like "Hot Touch" (silly, deceptive title is actually a double-entendre, which is revealed by book's end). I read the hardcover book (c. 1989, Loveswept/Doubleday edition) and am not familiar with the c. 2000 paperback version. I wonder if any of the content was revised? Although the 1989 version's cover art is incredibly dated, as are the descriptions of various wardrobe styles (the book is victim of the 1980s--which of itself lends to a few chuckles), the story is well told & demonstrates Deborah Smith's trademark for well-written characters.
What nudges the rating down to 4 1/2 stars: 2 side-stories: One re. Sin's owner is not fully fleshed out; and another side-story in which a farm animal's prolonged suffering is allowed by a humane Veterinarian, which is unrealistic (and clearly underscores the Author's religious beliefs). These aside, the story-telling is captivating and reads quickly. And true to form, Deborah Smith's magic shines through--along with her brand of humor--as she gives voice & deliberate conscious actions to an array of animals. A fun read! (Beware of Llamas!)
