Jazz In Berlin With Al Bowlly, And In Paris With Freddy Johnson, August 4, 2007
This review is from: Hot Trumpet in Europe (Audio CD)
This compilation comprises ten of the sides Arthur Briggs & his Savoy Syncopators recorded in 1927 (four of which feature Al Bowlly in his first vocal recordings), one of Briggs with Marek Weber, and four Savoy Syncopators sides from 1932, all cut in Berlin, The remaining nine tracks were made in Paris in 1933, mostly with pianist Freddy Johnson, the last four with their All Star Orchestra.
Many of these amazing recordings are uncompromisingly hot, particularly the Berlin sides, and derive much from the fire and pace of Arthur Briggs' trumpet, not forgetting the drummer who deserves special mention also. This is probably the jazziest band Al Bowlly ever recorded with, and he aquitted himself well, despite momentarily missing his cue on "I'm Coming, Virginia".
I've rated it 5 stars, but it's hard to find, and is second to the Truesound Transfers CD, which concentrates solely on the Berlin recordings, and features more of Al Bowlly's vocals.
