Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Sure, they're all sitting down playing acoustic guitars. But there's not much that's otherwise laid back about this particular get-together with Hot Tuna, a long-running offshoot of the Jefferson Airplane. Between performances, the DVD offers bar-side conversations with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Cassidy, who discuss how they created the band while on the road with Jefferson Airplane as an outlet for the kind of blues--country and otherwise-- they had started out playing before turning to rock & roll. The performances at the Sweetwater, a long-time landmark club in Mill Valley, California, include low-key ruminations on classics like "Hesitation Blues," as well as an acoustic rave-up on Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm," featuring former Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir and singer Maria Muldaur on vocals. Weir turns up on energetic bonus video tracks for the DVD, including "Walkin' Blues" and "Good Mornin', Little Schoolgirl." Production values are minimal; it was obviously shot with a limited number of cameras. But the playing is consistently inventive, with an additional 40 minutes of audio performance highlights on the DVD. --Marshall Fine

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Tuna For The Hall of Fame!, May 27, 2001

When watching these legendary musicians perform keep in mind that Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady started playing together in 1957, 8 years before they formed Jefferson Airplane. That is 44 years ago! It's Hot Tuna since 1970 and for that they should have their own entry into the Hall of Fame. Jorma is a virtuoso blues-rock acoustic guitarist, fingerpicker extraordinaire, and Jack is the bassist's bassist,...complimenting Jorma's playing such that results in the most special of musical occurances. Add Michael Falzarano's rhythm guitar and Pete Sears keyboards and Tuna is truely Hot.They are always fresh, always open. And the way Jorma attacks the guitar, you can always expect what you hope for,...I hope we can enjoy many more years of these guys trailblazing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great pickin' but mumbling, October 13, 2001
By
This review is from: Hot Tuna - Acoustic Blues Live at Sweetwater (DVD)
The interplay of the instrumentalists is superb, with a jazz-like fluidity at times, and it's a reminder that Jack Casady has never received his due as a bassist. But as a shot at a definitive document of the band, there are two problems: No "Death Don't Have No Mercy" and Jorma mumbles his way through most of the vocals, including, shockingly, "I Know You, Rider."
