5.0 out of 5 stars Kids loved it; assembly caused adults to grind teeth
I bought this for a five-year old boy. Once we assembled it, he loved it. Toy assembly, however, caused four intelligent adults (one of whom has an engineering degree) to rip their hair out. The directions were so bad and the assembly diagrams so incomprehensible that we really thought we weren't going to be able to put it together. It took several hours and all four...

Once you've put this set together -- and it's deceptively difficult for as small as it is -- and fire it up, you and your kid will probably say, "Cool!" 5-10 minutes later, you'll be looking for something else to do. If you buy another Hot Wheels car to put on the track (Matchbox cars don't work, and the box warns that "not all Hot Wheels cars are compatible" either), maybe there is some excitement in hoping the cars will crash at the intersection, causing the little "explosion" the designers have built in at the only possible crash site. However, straight out of the box, what you get is one car, a battery-powered impeller and a tiny track with two possible loop patterns, each of which literally takes less than two full seconds to complete. So you turn it on, drop the car on the track and watch it rocket around this loop and over a tiny (9 cm to be exact) jump again and again and again. If you want to interact, you can push down a lever and make the car take a different loop that is even smaller and has no jump. Is it cool? Initially... but it quickly becomes as interesting as watching the clothes spin around in the dryer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mattel are you listening?, March 14, 2004

This toy is about as much fun as all of the other over-hyped pieces of crap Mattel is foisting on our children nowadays. The greedy misers go out of their way to make sure none of the sets work together or can interconnect (and yes, I've bought a half-dozen or so). What you get is basically a self-contained unit that can only be put together one way. And they won't sell you individual tracks and connectors in stores any longer (though I saw one review that claimed you could get them direct from Mattel). Well, growing up my brother and I had only gravity, but we could put tracks together in a myriad of imaginative ways and create our own race courses, instead of being stuck with some adult's idea of what is supposed to be fun. Now wouldn't that be a great educational and creative "breakthrough" today?

I was able to buy a few spare pieces of track left on a shelf by accident in one toystore, no connectors and the salepeople didn't know what I was talking about. I made my own connectors from plastic milk jugs and my five year old likes the homemade tracks better than all the monstrous junk you can buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible craftsmanship..., July 25, 2004

This toy is terribly made. The connections between the pieces of track always come apart, because the connectors are so flimsy. Also, the "rails" on the sections do not always line up, so cars may hit them and lose speed, causing them to fall from the track. It's so bad that the car that is included barely makes it around the track once or twice before it falls.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this., September 20, 2004
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hot Wheels Zero G Hypersonic Track Set (Toy)
This Hot Wheels set is so cheaply made that the track never stays together and the grey pieces holding it up fall off. An adult has to constantly be there to reset the track. Also, the set is made so two cars can "crash" yet it only comes with ONE car. I've been to two stores looking for a second (because of the 20 or so Hot Wheels cars we have, not one of them fits this track), and no store has them in stock, or even knows what I am referring to. If my father (the grandparent) hadn't spent 45 minutes trying to figure out how to put it together, and then another 30 minutes a week later taping all the parts together, I would have returned this the minute we tried it out for the first time. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

This was a gift for our 4 year old and I can't stand it. The set takes FOREVER to put together and once it's set up it doesn't even work most of the time. It's very frustrating for my son. Don't buy this!

The directions were so bad and the assembly diagrams so incomprehensible that we really thought we weren't going to be able to put it together. It took several hours and all four adults to piece it together. It also seemed to be very cheaply made. The tracks kept popping apart because the joints weren't made very well. When I was a kid, Hot Wheels were well made.

Bought this last christmas for my 7 yr old...he's gone through all his cars and found quite a few that work in it. We haven't had any problems with it falling apart and we keep it on his bedroom floor! We recommend a heavy book to hold down the support at the high loop end to stablize the set. We actually think this is one of the better sets that have come out recently.

We are so frustrated by this piece of junk that I had to write a review. It is time consuming to put together and then does not work unless all the track pieces are lined up perfectly. We even bought special "zero-G" cars and they still fall off half the time. It worked the first time we put it together, but if it gets bumped by a younger sibling or moved, you have to start all over! I'm so tired of my 5-year old crying in frustration over this toy that we are throwing it away today & will try Matchbox's Rocket Park. Do not waste your time and money!

Grandpa bought this for my 4 y/o children. It is a hit! My husband and I put it together...it took a bit of coordination, but by no means was it too hard. The kids LOVE sending the cars around this thing, and it sure does go fast!

We've had NO problems with the track coming apart at all. Ours came with 7 cars, which was a bonus. We also followed the instructions which said to tape it down to the floor (we have it on our kitchen floor right now). This stabilizes it...perhaps that is why we haven't had any problems with anything coming apart???

The only thing I found is that occasionally one of the battery starts to come up, which starts to slow it down...when I notice the cars aren't zooming too fast, I lift that up and push the battery down, which is fine. I may just tape down the lid to keep it down.

I've also wondered if others are able to send 2 cars at once for any extended period of time? We can send one car all day long...when we add one, it catches the other and one falls off the loop..is that normal?

Other than that, great fun and the kids love it. (Oh, it's a little noisy, but that's okay!)

4.0 out of 5 stars This toy is fun, October 28, 2004

My 5 year old got this toy for his birthday and we've had a great time with it. He loves to watch the round thing fly off when the cars crash into one another. We have plenty of hot wheels cars that work in the toy so no problem there. It hasn't fallen apart on us yet, but it does use up batteries. Hot wheels toys are about fun. I guess you could say that it has educational value because the kid is learning about physics with this toy, but that would not be fun. I assume we'll play with this for a short while and then put it away - but I think the WOW factor was worth it.
