Biography

Isaac Hayes is known to millions today as the original voice of Chef from South Park, but in the 60s he was a songwriter and session musician for Stax Records, and in the 70s a prominent and influential soul and funk singer.

As a songwriter, he notably wrote (with David Porter) "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Coming" for Sam & Dave. In 1968 he released his debut solo album, and then his masterpiece… Read more in Amazon's Isaac Hayes Store

Editorial Reviews

One of the key links between the old-school soul of the R&B revue shows of the '60s and today's rap movement, Isaac Hayes gave to soul music not only a very sophisticated kind of rapping but also some style pointers in the shaved head, gold chains and wrap around shades. His biggest successes were with the movie soundtrack to Shaft and with Hot Buttered Soul (available through Ace as CDSXD 021 and CDSXE 005, respectively). While 1978s Hotbed may not be in the same major league, it still finds Ike working out, in his own unique way, on such vehicles as Bill Withers Use Me and the Ten Commandments Of Love

This review is from: Hotbed (Audio CD)
Though it's poorly documented, this 1977 Stax album (STX-4102) is, roughly speaking, a reissue of Hayes' 1975 album "Use Me" (STX-1043). It's notable mainly for the marathon 13-minute version of Roberta Flack's 1974 hit, "Feel Like Makin' Love" (written by Eugene McDaniel), which was also released as a single in 1978. Track listing:

1. Use Me
2. I'm Gonna Have To Tell Her
3. The Ten Commandments of Love
4. Feel Like Makin' Love
5. Hobosac and Me

The CD has four of the five tracks from the original LP, substituting the previously unreleased instrumental "Hobosac and Me" for "Good Love 6-9969." "Use Me," of course, is a Bill Withers song, and "Ten Commandments" is the old Moonglows doo wop classic.
