Editorial Reviews

From the Author

"It was 4:30 in the morning, and things were so dark and still, it seemed the whole world must be asleep, when I eased up to the gate at my first horse racing track. This was my first real trip to the backside, completely alive and at it's peak when most of us are in dreamland." (From the artist's statement in the book.)

From the Inside Flap

"There is an inherent nature in horses that draws people to them. Perhaps it is their beauty or their spirit. Or maybe that even in domestication, in their souls, they remain wild and free. All of these attributes are most certainly true of the Thoroughbred race horse. And here, in "Hotbloods", award-winning photographer Jon Kral has captured the essence of the Thoroughbred racehorse and the bond with their caretakers in stunning black and white photography. Enjoy." Jo Ann Guidry, Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will be thoroughly enjoyed by all horse racing fans, February 20, 2001
This review is from: Hotbloods: Beyond the Winner's Circle (Hardcover)
Jon Kral approaches the camera the way an artist approaches the canvas, and works with light, shadow, framing and imagery the way an artist uses paint, brush, and perspective. Hotbloods: Beyond The Winner's Circle is a visual celebration of the "back stage" race horse environment. The images of horses, people, equipment, stables, and race tracks are superbly crafted in full-page black and white photography. Hotbloods will be thoroughly enjoyed by all horse racing fans as well as photography-as-an-artform enthusiasts.

Jon Ward (Ft. Pierce, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hotbloods: Beyond the Winner's Circle (Hardcover)
Aside from winning the "Best Art Book" in the 2000 MIPA Book Achievement Awards and placing as a Finalist in the ForeWord Magazine "Book of the Year" awards as Best Art Book, "Hotbloods" also won a PMA Benjamin Franklin Award. Additionally, shots from the book won two National Press Photographer's Association "Picture of the Year" awards. The book is an outstanding example of documentary photojournalism taken to an art form. Congratulations to Jon Kral for the work.
