Kindergarten-Grade 3-Bright, gouache paintings lend animation to this silly story about baboons taking over a hotel after the manager, whose aunt has just won the lottery, whisks his guests away on a surprise vacation-away-from-their-vacation. Meanwhile, the Hughes family arrives and, after a bit of hesitation, they naively accept the interim caretakers as their hosts. At the end of the week, young Susannah Hughes writes to a friend, reporting that a good time was had by all: "We can't get Dad out of the treetops. Mom's eating orchids. And my hair has never looked better." Children will enjoy the playful chaos as the family members imitate the native protocol of the new primate proprietors. The fun-filled cartoons depict perfectly anthropomorphized animals, but the goofy premise is just too lightweight to bear repeated readings.-John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX
