If you listened to "Hotel Radio" without knowing anything at all about The Hazey Janes, you might think you were listening to some highly polished U.S. indie pop band. It turns out The Hazey Janes are in fact from Dundee Scotland, but if you're a fan of jangly guitar driven American indie pop groups like The Shins or The Rewinds), you should find them to be right up your alley.

The Hazey Janes manage to churn out a CD full of richly melodic pop tunes that move skillfully from uptempo ("Fire in the Sky") to midtempo ("Baby Tell Me", "Saturday") to soft and wistful ("Katie Goes") and even prove that they can flat out rock on songs like "Your Enemy". A constant throughout the album is that all the tunes boast tight arrangements with infectious choruses and strong, energetic vocals. "Don't Look Away" with its driving guitars and "ooh la la la" backed chorus is an unexpected hybrid of loud rock and sugary pop that works wonderfully well with Alice Marra's lead vocals (the only song on which she sings lead).

Mixing powerpop, indiepop and alt country in a surprisingly refreshing manner, "Hotel Radio" manages to be an irresistible and engaging gem of a pop album as well as a perfect introduction to the work of The Hazey Janes, a talented band that truly deserves a much wider audience.
